Will Osula

Recommended Posts

His movement and anticipation is not what you’d want, you could see it in pre season, he doesn’t find space or attack the box with any intelligence. don’t know if he has the footballing IQ to be a premier league striker.  Im also unconvinced a loan is the answer, he still needs real coaching as well as minutes, running around every week in the championship isn’t necessarily going to make him more effective for us, but might help us recoup our money down the line I guess. Hopefully he’s firmly 3rd choice soon and then we can see if he’s worth holding onto by next summer.

£15m striker signed from a relegated team with 4 goals in 61 senior appearances at the age of 22.  He's got a lot of heart but sadly I don't think he has the quality required to play at this level.  Would be happy to be proven wrong......

Some players are late bloomers and I get that, but honestly this guy's decision making is poor. Every time he got beat to the ball his main decision was to wrestle or foul the defender.

Again I've yet to see anything to suggest he's a striker, then again Kieffer Moore is scoring goals for fun for Wrexham so maybe a loan to a mid table championship team will do him wonders.

Howe picking Gordon over him speaks volumes to me though - even after having a year of Osula under his wing.

He's a good kid and works hard but he lacks to composure and awareness needed, he runs like he has no control of his body and fouls everyone in front of him, maybe giving him some time as an impact sub will work for this season but a lot of work is still needed on his game.

I really think he is being judged unfairly. Yesterday was his first PL start and the whole team from an attacking point were crap. Let’s say it as it is. Do people expect him to create something all by himself?

He scored a good goal against Liverpool and really should have had a start against AV in my opinion.

People seem to forget how even the best strikers can go games without doing much at all. At least he works hard in those games unlike a certain Isak, who I think would just have been completely invisible in a game like yesterday.

Other than a shot yesterday that was blocked where there were not really much else he could do, he really didn’t get anything to work with. Have people completely missed that this was one of the two lowest xG games in the PL the last year? The striker was not the issue, more Howes odd formation change and maybe being down from how the Liverpool match ended.

Waugh on Pod on the Tyne saying Howe was intensively coaching him throughout yesterday’s game and said in the post-match presser he partly changed formation to get two players closer to Osula, hinting that he’s not tactically disciplined enough or capable of playing lone striker in a 4-3-3.

Not surprised at all by that

He plays like a wasp trapped in a bottle. There’s plenty there but his decision-making is woeful. So many times yesterday he could’ve played a simple pass after doing well to control a long ball or ball into feet and he seemed intent on going for the difficult option that got him and us nowhere.

Thanks for listening so I don't have too.

Any other gems?

Feels like we paid a lot of money for a striker who has no significant record of goals in his CV. I think the only way you can justify the outlay is if we think he can become a wide man to good effect.

Nothing much, that was definitely the most interesting bit.

Yesterday was a good demonstration, watching Poor Jacob Murphy getting the ball on the half turn with his poor close control was triggering me

He's another Almiron, eager, full of energy and a real try hard but the quality has avoided him, love him but don't think he'll ever cut it at a team with regular CL aspirations.

Almiron was much better at running with the ball, and did a lot of great defensive work. Osula just loses the ball right after he recieves it most of the time.

£15m is not that much in today's transfer market. I think his transfer fee was £10m+5m add-ons btw? Given the amount of games he played I would imagine only a small portion of the add-ons would be activated.

Not too hard to recoup the money imo, a decent side in the Championship could pay that kind of money for a striker nowadays.

He was unlucky not to score but he can’t lead the line to what we require at present.

Should come as no shock that a player as raw as he is struggles a) in his early prem career and b) is shoehorned in a system we all found odd.

Obviously a loan with constant games is what he needs.
