Absolutely clueless second half performance from all involved.

One of those games where PSR bites for me. Don't think we even go near Kelly if it wasn't for that. Murphy certainly wouldn't still be getting games. 

 

We lack freshness and new ideas, trying to rely on what worked two seasons ago (hence the reluctance to put Tonali in over the tried and tested midfield), and then when it doesn't click things go really shit quickly.

 

I think Howe can take some of the blame, but the main problem for me is we have just hit a wall momentum wise as a club as a result of not being able to refresh and invest.

Tbf when Tonali played we were wide open in midfield. Longstaff came in and we started getting results so I can see why he left Tonali out. Needs to find a solution with Bruno,Tonali and Joelinton though as that has the potential to be a very strong midfield with loads of creativity. Just need to find that balance.

 

Shocking performance though, we looked so untrained. Simple passes and decisions just miles off.

Yeah, if Isak and Gordon had taken half of the big chances they've missed this season we'd probably be 2nd in the table. You've got to think that they'll start taking them at some point soon.

 

Then again, the second half performance was a worry I thought, it turned into a confusing, scatty mess that created absolutely nothing other than a possible penalty shout. 

 

I do think Eddie's been hung out to dry with the standstill of a summer window and that has probably played a part in how stale and predictable we look at times.

 

The good news for him, and us, is that the league is canny shit this season and it's still wide open for 3rd to 11th. All to play for if we can get a bit of consistency.

Gordon and Isak should have had a goal each within 3 minutes of each other for starters. Nunez or Haaland put those away.

How did the second half manage to be even worse than the first?

 

With the exception of Pope, why did the non-internationals feel miles off it compared to the others? What have they been doing all week? 

 

Ryan Taylor in the Barracks reckons it wouldn't be a surprise if we turned the scousers over next week. Pint of what you're on please mate, fucking hell.

Couldn't agree more and I really wish this was the first thing everyone would jump to on nights like this. It doesn't absolve anyone of an isolated poor performance, but the bigger picture is that this season looks every bit like the institutional anti-competitiveness finally striking. We were still riding a post-takeover wave even last season; this summer we were always going to need a boost, but it wasn't forthcoming. Criticise the Guehi chase if you like but there's no way we only sign Kelly/Osula if PSR isn't so stringent.

PSR is a problem, but we had plenty to spend in the summer and didn't. Just pissed money away on Osula and big wages on Kelly.

Really disappointed with that. Felt like a big game and chance to build after two really big wins. After 18 months of fits and starts, it felt like a big blow to not win today, and makes me doubt we're really going to build a good run.

 

Some vibes of the old days, an experience ive not felt in a while, with the hopeless performance at times and frustrated crowd. Not saying it's the same, just took me back a bit being in SJP tonight! 

 

So frustrating, some obvious quality at times but then at 2-0 never looked like getting back in it.
