Obviously things are difficult at the moment so I thought I'd go through the squad to see the overall quality of it.

The rankings are simple: top 4, 6, 10, 20.

Essentially would that player easily start for a hypothetical team who finished in those positions. e.g. Isak I think would find a place in a top 4 side, but I think Gordon would struggle to.

My rankings are below. My takeaway is whilst we have a number of good players overall quality is a bit thin on the ground. And this is where PSR starts to hurt us. Most teams aren't going to have a squad full of Top 4s - but ours is skewed too much towards the bottom.

Top 4

Isak

Botman (pre injury, remains to be seen following)

Hall (given more development)

Top 6

Bruno

Gordon

Tonali

Top 10

Livramento

Joelinton

Barnes

Willock (glass)

Top 20

Pope

Schar (age a factor)

Burn (age a factor)

Longstaff

Wilson (age/glass a factor)

Trippier (age a factor)

Kelly

Targett (maybe)

Krafth

Lascelles

Not Good Enough

That's bullshit about Murphy. He's been the best option on the right, created the chances yesterday. Possibly top 10 maximum.

That says more about our options at RW more than it does about Murphy. He isn’t good enough and definitely someone we should be moving on.

It felt harsh and was borderline both for him and Almiron but the question I asked myself was "would another PL team sign him"? And apart from a newly promoted team who were desperate I think the answer is no.

I feel it's a bit generous to be giving Hall top 4 given he is still quite raw when it comes to defensive work. Mbuemo gave him a really hard game yesterday and it didn't look like Hall had any answers. I think there's more of a case for Bruno, Tonali or Gordon being there.

I think Bruno is still a top 4 level player, he's just badly exposed at times in our system. He'd excel in a team like Liverpool. I think this is probably the case for Tonali too but obviously he still has a bit to prove.

Almiron, Murphy and Dubravka aren't great but would probably still be in the Top 20 list. I struggle to believe they wouldn't push to start for the likes of Southampton, Ipswich or Leicester.

The rest

In general, I don't think we have a top 4 squad and I think our position would be between 5th and 8th based on quality.

However, I think with everyone playing their absolute best we're a 3rd or 4th placed squad. That was evidenced. However, we cannot expect players to play almost beyond their capability for any prolonged period of time let alone for beyond a full season. We need more quality players who, when they play a 6 or 7 performance wise it is sufficient to enable a win.

Yeah, based on my relatively limited viewing that makes sense.

Was thinking about this the other day though. I think last year the two players of yours I would want to sign would have been Gordon and Bruno. This year I’d say Hall and probably either Tino or Isak. Partly position necessity, partly homegrown, but Hall is so talented, has so much time to learn and is perfect for us.

Be interested to see which two you’d want of ours.

Can get rid of the rest of them for me .

I think pretty much all of those players could start for a top 4 team. You’re right about the two halves of the squad though, I think that’s what makes it so hard to assess how good we should be.

I love Joelinton to bits, love his attitude and his work but I'm amazed seeing him consistently this high in folks' thoughts

He'd arguably not even make a top 6 side let alone a top 4.

Gordon into top 4 for me. Not seen enough of Tonali to put him in that bracket yet but feel he'll be there.

Naah, Gordon is a classic English winger, lots of running but not a lot of brain.

Botman (pre injury at least)

Tonali

Think that's it.

Gordon may get in some Top 6 teams there, depending on the teams you rank as Top 6 - big 6 or the current top 6? Same with Joelinton, but I think he'd struggle to be a regular starter in any Top 6 team.

Livramento and Hall both top 10 but think they have a way to go in their development.

Barnes and Willock Top 10, if the latter is fit.

Wilson is never fit so pointless even ranking him.
