Newcastle United vs. Arsenal [EFL Cup]: 05/02/25 @ 20:00 (SkySports)

This is caused by Joelinton absence rather than being defensive I think.

he’s picked his best 11 rather than a particular system (trips aside). Could give hall more license and Gordon more space inside. Wouldn’t class it as “shitting the bed”.

Martinelli against an out of form tripps and schar should be interesting. 😂 Isak has to get involved tonight big time cannot be having a barely in it game.

Going to be Trossard down that side.

Maybes he's thought we've been leaky the past few weeks so has hoyed an extra defender in to try and steady the flow of clear chances.

Additional height from set pieces and more ball players might be on his mind?

I think this is a cover for Joelinton, but I wish we'd tried Miley in there as a replacement.

A new, seemingly defensive formation is... interesting, but hopefully there's some nous to it.

Yeah, maybe losing Joelinton's height was the key reason

Interesting to see Eddie do something slightly different. It makes sense. We don't need to score, but we definitely don't want them to score. Arsenal must chase the game, there's a plenty of threat in our counter to punish Arsenal from over committing.

I expected Eddie to be on front foot and usual formation, but plenty of us bemoan he only plays one way a lot. Tactically I'm backing his 5 at back and counter attack strategy here. If we attack we give a desperate Arsenal a chance to hurt us when stretched.  They just score 5 past City, so will be hungry for attacking us.

The worst case scenario of Arsenal scoring 2 then it's a simple sub of one of the CBs to have us back to our typical shape. Hopefully none of it matters and Arsenal fuck off back home empty handed.

Roll on the final. :smug:

Trippier is there because his arse doesn't cave in on the ball when we're under pressure, unlike Tino at times this season

His pace is a concern though for sure.

It's cool we have burn to cover off trips lack of pace

Actually think 3 CBs suits our squad well, particularly with our attack-minded FBs.

Realistically the game was always highly likely to be a bit back and forth in the first 20 mins before gradually settling to them camping in our half, us being unable to play out of defence and relying on immediate long balls down the channels to generate any kind of threat, with the second half just being us booting it straight back to them and sitting in a low block.

Might as well start with the extra CB. Plus helps defend corners with no Big Joe.
