Newcastle United 4-3 Notts Forest - 23/02

Recommended Posts

The big book of football cliches says its a sign of a good team to win when you're not playing well.

I don't think it applies to teams that are 4-1 up at half time.

Because he’s been really poor all season, and again today whereas the rest of the back 4 haven’t ?

That was rank. [emoji38] Pundits barely had a chance to talk through the goals.

Hopefully once everyone's cortisol has drained a bit, we can enjoy what is actually a brilliant, important, rejuvenating win, and dwell only on that exceptional first half. We got away with it a bit but ultimately the reason why we did is because we put such a distance between us and them early on.

For how poor we where second half, did they actually create anything in open play? All of their threat came from set-pieces.

Elanga open goal back post.

It is.

It really isn't, he's not been as good as he has been in previous seasons, and his passing has been off for the most part, and personally I would probably play Botman and Burn going forward, but to say he's been "Utterly dreadful" all season is hyperbole at it's finest and factually not true.

Aye, I genuinely do think it was down to Howe asking us to lower intensity and kill the game off. Unfortunately we don’t have the quality to do it.

It's mental how quickly Hall has surpassed Tino like. Feel like Tino has stagnated this season.

The hasty side of me thinks we should cut our losses on Tino tbh. Never seems to impress these days.

Yes you dummy, it went from 3 additional goals to 1 goal. Thanks to some really shit play since you weren't watching the match.

Not sure it was very rejuvenating in all honesty.

Take away our intensity and we are a poor side.

Good job I didn’t say “utterly dreadful” then if we are taking about things not being factually true [emoji38]

Sick of him just looking to draw free kicks in unthreatening areas every time he gets the ball. It just breaks up our play and puts us in danger when he doesn't get them

It's clearly not being addressed by the coaching staff too.

Becoming more and more of a problem.

Well that'll be determined by forthcoming results I guess. But it was absolutely crucial that we remembered how to win at home and we did. From behind, too, for the first time this season.

Nice to have all the game down my end, but not great for the nerves. Can we at least try to keep the ball or play it in behind at least once in the second half.

3 points move on but we can't park the bus we're just asking for trouble.

I don't think he's necessarily stagnated, but I think teams have sussed out that Tino isn't very good with the ball and as a result they trigger their press when he receives it. If he has time to start running with the ball he can be quite good at dribbling at speed though, so it's a double win in a way to do it.

Need to work on keeping the ball and controlling the game. We finished the game with Miley, Bruno and Tonali for fucks sake, yet we can't keep the ball? It's a coaching issue.

Seeing Livramento come inside and find no options. Lazy foul after lazy foul inviting pressure. Players not tracking their runner. It needs sorting out.

Also, Callum Wilson is DONE. He offers nothing and his lack of pace causes us problems. He should be a last resort off the bench.

Great spell in the first half, but I'm really struggling to get over that second half. I'll take the points. Botman and Joelinton back please ASAP.

Okay, "Utterly Dreadful" vs "Really Poor", the point still stands and you know it

he’s been poor most of the season but also clearly has bags of potential.

Needs some genuine competition I think. I’d be considering starting Krafth at the moment though.

I didn't see the whole game, was Bruno that bad?

He was ok. Not great but ok.  Changed his position to be slightly deeper again. The midfield worked pretty well first half but they all really struggled second half. If Tonai hadn't come on for Willock I think we may have drawn that.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m chuffed with the win and doing the double over a team doing so well, and the table looks great. But I can’t see that second half performance giving the players any confidence in closer games when teams are trying to put pressure on. There are a lot of question marks at the moment.

We were absolutely thirsting to let Forest come back into this game. Absolutely atrocious second half.

Fine margins though. Had schars header dipped in. It likely would have been a quieter second half. We don't help ourselves out though sometimes and the arse falling out of the majority of our players when the glimmer of a chance of forest coming back into it was terrifying.

Credit to Forest for the second half. Nuno neutralized pur wide play and adjusted to Eddie's plan. Again we didn't have an answer to plan A not working.

Job done though and a much needed 3 points to give us a glimmer of hope for top 4/5 again.
