Jonas
Shit but nothing I didn't expect (or predict on here) likewise that things would swing against us this week re the CL. Was too much to ask for things to keep going as they were and too much to ask for them to get dumped out of the CL twice in a week. Considerably smaller squad and thus no fresher despite their CL campaign than them and Emery has a massive hard on for Tindall after all the times we've tore the arse out of them. toontownman
Villa and Emery are our bogey team recently. It's a nice rivalry of two teams with similar trajectories.

JUICE690
Listening on the radio and it sounded like they gave our backline (marking man to man) a torrid time by turining them with pace. Did we adapt to that at all?

Stottie
Missed most the first half, but witnessed the whole of the second. They killed us down the right again and again, and we should probably have reorganized to counter it. The Maatsen goal that opened the floodgates happened with Trippier suckered into midfield and AWOL from RB. We looked leggy and didn't get into it. We're still third though and have it all in our own hands. Time to regroup, hopefully with Eddie fit and well.

You've stated that Longstaff could have started today - you can't tell me if one of Bruno, Tonali or Joelinton were on the bench for Longstaff before the game that you and everyone else would have been happy. Throwing in 3 or 4 completely out of form players against Villa away seems completely ridiculous to me I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. We should have rotated but the only options you're giving me are players who have been poor for a number of games fucking hell you're still not getting it. We have a few games a season where we're so far off it physically and our lack of rotation compounds it. We can use our squad better, identify when players need resting and rotate better. I'm not trying to say I would have picked a better lineup than Tindall. If your reply is "LOOLZAS WUD U PLAY L8NGSTAFF OVER TONSLI!!!?!!!" then I'm afraid I'll need to tap out. Maggies
I’d love to see the difference in how we got on against teams who press our defence compared to teams who don’t. I think our biggest issue is the limited passing ability of Pope, Schar (minus his 60 yard cross field passes) and Burn. That then brings our midfield too deep and leaves Isak isolated. ExiledGeordie
We were very leggy and sloppy most of the day today, midfield was piss poor, well everyone was really. Frustrating loss but we were second best all over the pitch. I do wonder whether it was just a game too far with lack of rotation, Villa’s squad is far deeper than ours and I think it showed today. I also think today showed we need some real pace at CB vs fast physical players like Watkins. That definitely needs addressing in the summer. A few days off then refocus for Ipswich next sat which is obviously a must win but there will be pressure building. Nothing indicates we can’t still get CL from here. Tsunami
Reminded me of the 3-0 loss at their place a couple of seasons back. Emery nullified our midfield and they were able to get 1 on 1s far too easy against our back line. We weren’t able to use a low block as their forwards held a line perhaps 30 yards out forcing our defenders up the pitch. That said our quality on the ball wasn’t there and I agree that Isak looks in need of a rest. Will be interesting to see how we line up against Ipswich. Got to be a temptation to start Gordon and perhaps Willock and Krafth.
M1tche
19 minutes ago, Stifler said: My point is that Villa have used the transfer market to bring players in who are fresh. We haven’t, that’s the difference. Villa might just be able to have that edge in a game that is tight against a similarly talented side. We learnt nothing from today’s game aside from what we already know. Our squad depth isn’t good enough, it isn’t good enough to bring players on towards the end of games, and it’s not good enough to turn the tide in games. If we don’t address it in the summer, then it will get worse with us having European football next season, and some of our older members of the squad being a year older. In the wider context I don’t think we have helped ourselves with things like Miggy being held on the bench for 6 months instead of selling him in the summer, and for giving Dubs a new contract when we should have been showing him the door and had a good offer for him. Now do I think Wilson has shown anything for the last 12-18 months of being here why he should be getting those minutes at the end of games instead of trying to give our youngster (Osula) a chance instead. I also think being 4-0 up against Crystal Palace at half time should have triggered some changes as well. Ive seen a few posts of Villa depth, so this isnt aimed at you but yours was a good post to quote tbf. Villa have better depth, but are also in a position that even without the loan ages they NEED champs league to not have a fire sale, they're backs to the wall with no way out. They had no choice but to gamble again in Jan to go as deep into the Champs league, and FA cup as possible, whilst also making charge for qualification next season. It'll be an absolute fire sale if they dont make it, and all the good work will be undone in 1 summer, or they face wherever reprocussions come with going over every single spend to turnover rate going. nemtizz
I mean if we we're giving our best options more minutes off the bench; Miley and Osula for example that would make more sense. Continuing to reward Longstaff and Wilson for adding nothing positive is bewildering. Edited April 19 by nemtizz

You keep saying we should have rotated and rested players but you don't seem to appreciate that the players on the bench are either shite or completely out of form We can't put players like Digne, Onana, Rashford and Ramsay on the bench. It's easy to say "oh we should have rotated" after a loss but there was no mention of that before the game and you're completely overrating the players we do have on our bench

Im confused by so few getting that the rotation needed to come in the games at home against bottom half side, or even away to relegation fodder. So, we could go full strength, and full pace, away to top 5 contenders
Heron
Got our tactics a bit wrong and started off on the wrong foot performance wise. Somehow managed to keep a foothold in the game through their inability to make the most of their opportunities which then clicked second half and they subsequently battered us. Was always a risk here for me. Disappointed but not shocked. Gotta put Ipswich to bed next week and then hopefully one or two results go our way to ease the pressure. There were no suggestions to play Longstaff before the game- you know we've played the same team for 6 or 7 games in a row now, how can you have no idea about us potentially being knackered as if it was common sense that we should have rotated? Anyone suggesting we should have played Longstaff today is completely out of their mind In hindsight I would have played Longstaff instead of Bruno. Actually I would have played a tent instead of Bruno today.

Newcastle Fan
Our best bet against Villa is always to attack their high line on the break, conceding after 40 seconds pretty much blew any plan to do that out of the window, our midfield balance looked so off today which is not what you need in a game against a strong opposition. Adrian1881
Villa was so much better than us - sadly they deserved to win. We had our chances but lately Isak just doesn't score as much as he should. Anyways it's amazing that we are so close to reach ECL.... We haven't spent any $ for ages...Luckily for us, our main squad didn't deal with many injuries. We took a big risk to not spend any money. Imagine if Isak, Bruno, Tonali got injured...Let's move on to the next ones :).
