It's become such a weird fixture this one over the last couple of years in that whoever wins has won comfortably but in the long run it hasn't negatively impacted either team . We just need to write this one off and move on.

Obviously what they Have done is powerful in the short term and in that specific context but I prefer our approach personally. Although I would love for us to actually do a better job managing FFP. we gave away by trading Anderson and not some random academy kid. 

Don’t think they will be too worried personally, this is what Monchi and to some degree Emery do.

Yes and no right? I mean for my money they were super lucky our owners decided to create the chinese super league mark 2 and bail them out twice. If not they'd be up shits creek and not be able to do what they've done. 

 

It's kinda working out for them now sure, but it's a short term fix and contrary to what some seem to think it's a super expensive fix at that.

Villa were great yesterday, we’ve given them some real beatings under Emery so I had a feeling they’d be bang up for this one after the tindall antics and the psg game, and they were.

Villa also HAD to win and they played like that. I had a feeling we might come unstuck at some point and to be honest given the distinct lack of options beyond the starting 11 I think this team has done phenomenally this season really.

yeah this. I think this is the first team to properly exploit the space Trippier leaves when he pushes forward - since he came back regular again.

He was off definitely. Not even the unnecessarily aggressive chasing, but in possession too. Joelinton as well, noticed him being very ponderous and awkward on the ball a few times. Tonali had a great game (thankfully!). Isak is crying out for a goal; not sure if Villa set-up in a clever way to cut him out or it was/is just the way we set up but he looked very isolated.
Towards the end of the game (way too late to see if it would make a difference) looked like Gordon was trying to join Wilson more as a two. Would have liked to see this with Isak once we went behind (and were obviously on the ropes) plus a ‘Joe’ swap and Longstaff for Guimares. Bold move and obviously seems in hindsight now, but our boys from Brazil were not at it and the system wasn’t working.

Commentary said it was our 7th game in a row with an unchanged side. Was vey surprised to hear that. Our subs often look a bit lacking sharpness and I do wonder if the fact we never rotate is an issue. I wouldn’t have been shocked to see Gordon start for example or Krafts in for Tripps from the off given his age and playing time recently.

 

It will exceedingly hard for Willock to get match sharpness if he never starts either.

3 games is 6 days is a lot for any team - Villa's bench won the game.  Now it's a weeks air gap between the remaining games.

I felt we started with the wrong tactics and kinda went in too open. It could have easily been 4 - 1 at half time let alone full time.

 

If we started the game doing what we seemingly did at the start of the second half and sat in, looking to break out, and kept it tight then I think we'd have fatigued less and not been pulled around so much. Our midfield 3 were stretched apart often trying to cover full backs too much and trying to help struggling, slow centre backs.

 

By the time the second half came we'd been chasing the game to get it level and were fucked. I get why we kept stronger players on for so long in recent games but this was always the danger tbh.

 

Their change in personnel then won them the game in the scoresheet but performance-wise they got what they'd deserved from the first half.

 

They're an excellent side, with an excellent manager - it has to be said. Champions League is vital to both clubs though to sustain this breaking down of the "big 6". It really does demonstrate the sheer ineptitude of the likes of Spurs and Man United that they have had such a fall from grace this season with such squad depth at multiple levels and time at the 'financial top'.

 

Villa have rolled the dice on loans to get them to the CL. I feel they'll do similar next season with maybe an addition of one big summer signing. I think that works until they slip up one season and then they're pretty much out the frame.

 

We're not rolling the dice and running a similar risk - expecting the same players to achieve or in some instances over-achieve relentlessly.

When one of our subs is Talos/TinMan it’s not surprising.

I’ve no doubt by the time window closes in the summer we’ll be in the stronger position. We appear to be in a great position to spend. They done a ton on wages for temporary signings

Our midfield which is usually so dominant was way off it. As Terrymac said both Bruno and Joey having very bad games left us exposed. Isak didn't have a sniff either. 

 

Hoping Man City do us a favour Tuesday, probably best for them to win I fully expect them to ease into 3rd spot next few weeks so hoping Villa, Chelsea and Forest drop points wherever possible. We're all Spuds fans Monday ,👀😬

Villa had to win whereas a result for Newcastle would've been a bonus. Great manager, vocal support and a battle hardened and embittered side(towards Newcastle probably and after midweek) all played a part. There's a reason managers are paid handsomely and yesterday showed why.

 

Positives are no injuries, an ideal fixture next week to negotiate. Get Howe back hopefully and go all out for next 3 games that are all winnable.

Fair play to Villa. I was confident we could draw / get a result of some sort. 

 

Felt like watching us when we swarm and suffocate other teams in our good performances

People are saying we played poorly, and it's true, we did play poorly but I think a lot are underestimating just how good Villa were at pressing us into mistakes and just essentially shutting us down. Playing poorly when in excellent form and meeting one of the best teams in the best division isn't a coincidence, they carved out chance after chance and stopped us from doing what poorer teams couldn't do. 

 

There's a decent chance that PSG go on and win the CL but even they lost at Villa just a few days before we did. Villa look the real deal unfortunately and they had they quality and freshness on the bench. No surprise that they clicked it up another gear as soon as the subs came on, their energy changed the game and they scored 2 quick ones to wrap it up and make it look easy

I thought it was a combination of Villa's quality, our fatigue and our tactical approach that did for us in the second half.

 

One to take on the chin and move on from. Wednesday meant that this was a bit of a free hit. We need to do the business v Ipswich and I'm sure we will.

Missed the game, caught glimpses on catch up and just seems a big L.

 

Think it shows the lack of depth our squad has, because whilst they can be great and on it, when it’s the same XI each game it doesn’t get the opposition thinking and they know how to work on to play against us.

 

Badly need some good signings this summer so we can mix it up and keep opposition guessing.

 

Doesn’t change much to our chances of Europe, win the home games we get top 5. Especially if we can load up on our GD against Ipswich by +4.

Same as the one away to Southampton after that horrible defeat to Bournemouth. A messy unimpressive win against a terrible side will do fine.
