This does seem like exactly the moment where Spurs move in like.

And we are left sat on a rock wanking and crying

You say that like it's a bad thing

If we look at what Villa would want for Watkins whose a year older ( Wissa scored more than him last two years, then £35m would be a cracking deal and probs gets accepted, hopefully we are rapid in getting it done and not the usual snails pace .... Need some good transfer news soon

Is it time to go back to the Bruno/Isak-style well of players after we've finished mucking about with this one, please?

That's what's making these 'sagas' all the more exhausting. We've seen the club can sound out quality players that are slightly off the radar with less competition for their signature. At what point do we reach that on our list of targets again?

One theory as to why we've stopped going after European targets: transfers are much more about relationships than they are about scouting. It's 2025 and every club knows who the good "targets" in Europe are, the ones that get to the front of the line are people who have pre-existing relationships with the selling club that can help you get in there and negotiating before anyone else.

For all his footballing brilliance, I doubt Howe has extensive contacts with business-side executives at European clubs (or European agents), so it's more difficult for us to get on the phone with them or to get good deals. That's why it's important to have a well-regarded sporting director in modern football. These people all hang out in the same circles/attend the same conferences etc. The easiest way to get ahead on transfers is if you "know a guy."

I don't disagree that a lot of it is who you know but when we're talking about players signed 3 years ago I don't see how much that's really changed. Especially considering the club hierarchy was more bare bones than it is now, even ignoring the need to figure out Mitchell and Eales's replacements.

All speculation, but may have been largely based on PIF/PCP connections. Former is less involved now and latter is gone.

I see we are low balling clubs again. Agree terms with player/agent then go in with a low offer so some other club can come along and take things forward as they are willing to pay more.

Is it just me or are add ons literally part of every single transfer now? When did this become the norm? Nobody seems to just go for a flat fee now.

They always have been, they're just reported/not reported depending on the agenda being pushed (see Ekitike).
