Parsley
Missing AFCON apparently: https://x.com/FourFourTwo/status/1986785656694321607?t=bcWpVtKBqQjm4AmxsF6IaA&s=19 EDIT: Ignore, just quotes Craig Hope's earlier article. Casey
Might take pelters for this but I think it's absolutely absurd for people on here to expect a player of any nation to forego international duty. Strongly of the belief that those saying he should fob it off would never say the same if this was a 29 year old England national. Obviously circumstances have made it ultra shite for us, but c'est la vie. Still excited to see what Wissa can do for us once he's up to match fitness. Agree completely, apart from the bit about England, as a think most would be happy to see one of our players miss out for them too if appeared to have a direct benefit to NUFC. Friendlies, certainly, and even qualifiers to an extent, but we can hardly be expecting players to sack off major tournaments because it’s an inconvenience to the club. sushimonster85
People saying they'll just pick him anyway, it does state in Hope's (I know) piece that talks are ongoing. Suggesting he/we may be trying to work something out with the federation to not pick him, rather than them not picking/picking him based on injury reasons. The only way I could see him not going to AFCON, would be if they were to qualify for the WC next week (big ask tbh) and we managed to convince everyone, including Wissa himself, that it would be better for his long-term fitness leading into the WC, if he just stayed here with us and managed his minutes. Seems unlikely though.

If you read the thread, I think you would rather take pelters for saying the opposite. I agree that it should be mainly his choice, as most seem to agree with. You're not taking pelters for that, it's completely reasonable. I don't want him to miss out playing for his country either even though I'd selfishly prefer he was available for Newcastle. But we've given him a chance to play for us in the CL. An unfortunate injury, maybe because he overplayed for Congo whilst unfit, has so far robbed him of that. I wouldn't take the chance off him to play for his country either. This is not an Owen situation where he didn't want to be here in the first place and clearly prioritised England. Get him match fit, let him play, then hope he helps us storm through the end of the season.

I dunno like, plenty don't give a fuck about England. I care slightly more these days and it was down to Southgate getting me back on board TBF. But I'd always wants what is best for NUFC over any international. England or otherwise. I used to barely even watch the national side. Not that I think we should try and stop him, mind. It's only if he feels like he wants to stay here and help the club. After what was pretty poor from DR Congo in the first place. Him getting injured is partly down to them IMO. I posted the video on here of the injury multiple times like. Primarily to dissuade the attitude that it was somehow DRCs fault. It was a very awkward fall caused by his foot getting stuck in the turf, could have happened at minute 1 or minute 60 in either of the first or second game he played that international duty. Probably not the worst outcome for us as well. We need him to build up some match fitness and the international games will be much less intensive than PL games. FLUMPO235
I don’t actually like any of our players playing for England. To be fair it’s not something we have had much experience of in recent history. After the initial pride in having our players in the England team, I go straight to worrying about them getting injured or heads turned by other overpaid players from other clubs. We will never know, but fatigue means that your muscles an ligaments offer less stability, and as such those types of occurences can inflict more damage than what they otherwise would, while also slowing down your reaction time such as when he started losing his balance. All of this can be the difference between just being in pain and actually getting injured. Your body is simply more susceptible to damage. Not saying he would never have been injured if he was fit there, but it could still have been the deciding factor for the injury. Yeah I watched that (didn't realise that was you) and you may well be right. My only caveat would be, coming from a background of zero medical knowledge to be clear here, that if the muscle strength around the knee is better from having been match fit, isn't it more likely to protect a ligament. But I don't know what I'm talking about there as I've freely admitted. Could have been the pitch, could have just been one of those freak injuries which might have happened at any time.
