Newcastle United 1-1 Barcelona (10/03/26) | post-match from pg. 43

The ref was absolutely shit. The linesmen was wrong on many of ours in the first half ending passages of play that should have stayed on. The 4th official even got involved with a clear Joelinton tackle.

Absolutely gutted, as we all are. Still would have been a big ask at their place even with 1-0 lead, but would have been fantastic to close that out and get the high of beating them.

Howe and the team can be so proud of that performance, though. Can't really think of a player who had an off night.

Obviously, Everton was a debacle and City battered us for 60 mins in the cup, but performances in general have improved of late. Regardless of what happens in the return leg, it feels like a team that is going to string a lot of good results together after the international break. Bruno and Miley will make a huge difference to that, too.

Needs to get drastically better at controlling the ball, but Osula up top was the right call from Howe with Gordon ill. For all his faults, his ability to be something of a focal point and threaten with pace is giving us far more than Woltemade and Wissa.

Hall was phenomenal, and the midfield three were excellent. Ramsey's development over recent weeks is a huge plus. Great to see Elanga have a largely positive outing as well. I feel for Thiaw, a clumsy challenge but a really clever bit of skill from Olmo, it happens.

Thankfully, we have an extra day's rest over Chelsea and Gordon should be relatively fresh, as should the other three strikers. Nothing to fear there, and we can attack the away leg on a big pitch that should suit us. Whatever happens, they've done us proud.

Absolutely immense performance that. Completely dominant. We should be incredibly proud... just a shame the way it ended.

On that showing, there’s absolutely no reason why we can’t go there and get a result!

As mad as this sounds I’m more confident in us going there to win then defending for our lives for 90 mins to protect the lead.

It's a shame the game ended up like that right at the death, as it has too often this season.

It's ended up spoiling what was a ridiculously good performance from the boys, missing some incredibly important players from the team that started tonight.

Glad they were able to at least get a goal and that penalty hasn't ended up meaning a loss, as that would have been horrendous.

Fair play to the team tonight. Still think they deserve huge credit.

Think Rich said the same, it makes sense like.

Fucking hell, we were so close.

I thought we edged it, but lacked a bit of end product as we've cone to expect. To be pegged back by a last minute penalty is gutting.

Thought we were excellent overall. A bit more measured and less frantic (last couple of minutes aside) than we were in the first game against them earlier in the season. So frustrating to concede like that at the end, but I think we can go there and give them a really good game

I always tell myself disappointments like that pay off in the end. The joy of the cup win felt like every moment of disappointment like that being released as elation, converted. It builds character. These are my 1am rationalisations

Can’t fault us tonight - were good value to win the game by a couple.

We gave PSG a game at their place and wouldn’t write us off next week.

Football can be so cruel.
The referee can, of course, add on stoppage time for the substitution, but I've also seen many matches where stoppage time wasn't extended.

Olmo wanted the penalty and he got it. That was his only chance. The middle was very congested; he would never have gotten through. Unfortunately, Thiaw did him the favor of letting him go down.

Just look at the time on the clock man. How is that ball being played right through the middle to Olmo at that stage of the game ... why is there such a big gap between the defensive line and the midfield line? Why are there so many gaps to exploit so late in the game holding onto a one goal lead.

This has to get sorted out in this team. Don't know if it means getting in a midfielder with a better sense of defensive positioning. This pass has been happening into that gap for I don't know how many years now! Puts the defenders in a terrible spot every time. Players constantly sneak into that position and punish the team.

Only time they managed that pass. Barca do that by habit. We switched off for a second after a battling 94 minutes. Harsh analysis

Howe said: “I haven’t seen the goal again and it’s sort of a little bit unclear to me quite what happened. Sometimes you don’t get the fixed picture, so I’d need to see it again before giving you my opinion.

“But certainly as a team, we should have done better. We defended so well for the game, all through the game in different phases.

The goal seemed soft. All I remember is a ball went through the middle of us and it should never happen at that stage of the game."

I had this thought too. At a goal up we’d just protect the lead and inevitably let one in. At least like this it’s a clean slate and let’s fucking get into them.

Just saw extended highlights. What's most annoying is on our day we really can beat anyone, it's just a shame our day seems to be once every 3 months.

Huge summer ahead.

I was thinking about this too. We played really well and deserved more but it makes me question our motivation as well because sometimes we simply dont show up.

What was the question that he was asked?

Just wish we had more options to rotate for the Chelsea game. Cus likely alot of those players will have to go again and then give everything away to Barca then somehow go again for the derby.

Is it true Yamal would have been suspended if he got booked tonight? That confirms how corrupt the whole thing is then. Ref was under clear instruction not to book him because you'll never see a more blatant yellow.

We can play Tino, Botman, Willock, Murohyx2, Wissa & Woltemade I reckon.
