Glenn Roeder blasted Newcastle United after watching his side turn in a gutless performance in the 2-0 defeat at Charlton Athletic yesterday.

 

Roeder kept his players locked in the dressing room for nearly an hour after the final whistle.

 

And there is no doubt that the under-achieving United players were told in no uncertain terms that not only the defeat but the manner of it was not good enough.

 

Certainly it was a grim-faced bunch of United players who emerged to board the team bus.

 

Only Nobby Solano and Antoine Sibierski were prepared to be interviewed by the media, as most players kept their heads down.

 

 

Roeder would not give any details of what was said but he told me today: "I needed to tell the players what my thoughts were because once again this was a game we should not have lost but we did.

 

 

"Just as we should not have lost at Fulham and Wigan."

 

 

United should have had the game won by half-time but failed to cash in on their superiority. And they were naive and unprofessional in the extreme in the way that, after Darren Bent's free-kick had hit the crossbar, they let Zheng Zhi react the quickest to nod in the rebound.

 

 

Roeder added: "This was mentioned. In fact, everything we did wrong got a mention in our dressing room after game."

 

 

This being the case, it's a wonder it didn't take a couple of hours for the United's players to drift out of their dressing room.

 

 

To be fair to Roeder, there wasn't much wrong with his tactics or team selection and you can hardly blame him when a man for whom he paid £10m managed to miss the goal from four or five yards.

 

 

But for me, what yesterday proved is that United have five or six players - bought by his predecessors - who are simply not good enough and both Roeder and Freddy Shepherd will realise this.

 

 

One who is good enough is Steven Taylor, who missed yesterday's game because of the calf injury aggravated in Thursday's UEFA Cup exit in Alkmaar.

 

 

However, Roeder is taking a hard line with Taylor after telling him today he will not be joining up with the England Under-21 squad for Saturday's first match at the new-look Wembley against Italy.

 

 

When I suggested that England could still expect the United defender to link up with their squad and see their doctor Roeder rapped: "My No 2 Nigel Pearson is very much involved with the England Under-21 set-up and he knows Taylor is injured."

 

 

A HIGH-POWERED United delegation travelled to an undisclosed venue today as Emre faced the FA on a charge of racial abuse.

 

 

Freddy Shepherd, chief operating officer Russell Cushing, Nicky Butt and Roeder all attended today's hearing, along with Emre and his legal team.

 

 

However, United do not expect the FA to announce their decision for a couple of days.

It's just as well Newcastle United have 37 points in their Premiership bag.

 

Because the way they are going there would have been every danger of them swapping the Premiership for the Championship.

 

That's where Charlton are heading, and it is easy to see why.

 

Quite frankly, Charlton looked what they are at The Valley yesterday - a team destined for relegation.

 

So just where does that leave Newcastle United after yet another sad and sorry show?

 

 

Well, as I have already said, thankfull for those 37 points.

 

 

Certainly Sheffield United and Watford will be relishing the visit of a United side which, in its last two away games in the Premiership, have been absolutely spineless and gutless.

 

 

At least at Wigan they showed some spirit in the dying stages in their bid to snatch a point.

 

 

But yesterday at The Valley I am saddened to say that once Oba Martins missed the chance of the season and Zheng Zhi put Charlton ahead within a few minutes, the United heads went down.

 

 

I can excuse Martins missing, but the fans have every right not to see Newcastle United throw in the towel.

 

 

But that's exactly what happened at The Valley, and the last half an hour was an embarrassment to the club.

 

 

It's hard to believe that only 10 days ago United put four goals past the second best team in Holland in the first 40 minutes of the UEFA Cup-tie with AZ Alkmaar at St James' Park.

 

 

Yet for all their possession yesterday, especially in the first half, it wasn't until injury time that home keeper Scott Carson was actually called on to make a save.

 

 

And by then it was too late after Nobby Solano had conceded United's first Premiership penalty of the season.

 

 

Both Charlton goals came from dead-ball kicks, and Shay Given had every right to be furious about the first.

 

 

When I tried to speak to him after the game Given said he had nothing to say, but I bet he had plenty to say in the dressing room when, as in the case of his penalty save against Alkmaar, he was left completely exposed again after Darren Bent's free-kick.

 

 

As it happens, Charlton did not need their second goal because Newcastle United had lost the will to fight.

To keep Dyer in midfield, and to keep Sibierski upfront, after the uber-ineffectiveness from the whole attacking line-up on Thursday night, was absolutely idiotic. Away from home aswell. And Emre on the left ahead of N'Zogbia? Jesus Christ.

Of the 11 that started yesterday's game, 4 were Roeder signings - Martins Duff Sibi and Gooch, I wouldn't have thought he meant Given, so that just about leaves everyone else who started, mind its only taken him about a year to realise they're pants and given the way Roeder likes to study his new signings roll on the 2008 transfer window :bang:
