Racism in football

He is accused of calling Ferdinand a ‘f****** black ****’ during the match at QPR’s Loftus Road stadium.

But afterwards he told Ferdinand, whose brother Rio plays alongside Terry for England, that the remarks had been taken out of context, insisting he actually said: ‘Oi, Anton, do you think I called you a  black ****?’

It's clear as day he calls Ferdinand a "fucking black cahnt" and he's already admitted saying it.

Terry says he was having a conversation with Ferdinand, Ferdinand says he had no idea Terry had spoken to him until after the game.

It's far more nailed on than the Suarez one.

Fuck me, racism is all you hear about these days. My 2 or 3 non-white (is that term allowed these days?) friends don't get offended by a lot of terms and find it quite funny when us limeys get on our high horses about nothing comments with zero malice in them.

racism isn't all you hear about and it's not so much the terms as the circumstances in which the terms are used.

People are on their high horse in support of the people who expressed offence (non-white) at the abuse and against weak clubs and the FA.

No one would bat an eyelid if you said the Swedish word for coloured in a discussion like that...

Why would they? The Swedish word exists in a completely different, ahistorical context compared to the English one. Stupid comparison.

Yeah, never mind reading the context of why I said that. Wullie wondered how the U.K compares to other Westernised countries, and I gave him one.

And let's be honest, it's not like you've got a fucking clue what the context of the Swedish word is, do you? So until you can give a better comparison, I suggest you keep your mouth firmly shut before you start patronising me.

That said, I personally find the term 'coloured person' really offensive and although not really racist, its arguably more damaging than say the phrase 'darkie' or 'nigger' (depending on context of course) and that's because if shows utter ignorance and highlight's one's 'colour' when colour shouldn't even come into it. It is basically a nice way or a none racist way to say "hey you're black" or not white.

How is darkie (a word you have used a few times) less offensive than coloured? How does it not highlight someone's colour in exactly the same way? ???

Darkie or Nigger are obviously far worse, not overly fond of coloured either from a personal point of view. White, black or Asian seems to be the more acceptable types of description if you have to point out someone's colour :dontknow:

In defence to Hansen he obviously meant no harm and is clearly just ignorant to the word. I work and socialise with plenty of people who say it all the time without a seconds thought.

Perhaps being in the public eye as much as he is he really should take more notice of such things but I still think it's unfortunate on his part and the very worst that should happen is for him to be sent on some sort of course and maybe another short apology at the start of the programme.

I'd be interested to know how our free speech in Britain compares to other Westernised countries. Nobody would defend Alan Hansen's right to wear a white hood on MOTD but complaining about a harmless word in a harmless context on a football show, regardless of whether you're black or white, is canny pathetic if you ask me.

In Victoria, Australia there is a law on the books that gets the back up of all the conservatives - I think it's called the Racial Hatred and Villification Act. When properly applied, virtually any derogatory reference to racial grouping or heritage is a criminal offence. It's rarely applied though, but if (for instance) Michael Clarke or Lucas Neill spoke the way Terry and Suarez are alleged to have, then elements in the media would see to it that the racial hatred laws were applied. If Richie Benaud referred to "coloured" people live on air, the only thing that would save his job is his iconic status in the media industry - anyone else would be gone that day.

But then, Australia is a fucking redneck wonderland, so we probably need laws like that to bring Australia into the 21st century - "boat people" have become a genuine political issue, but only because both major parties want to be seen as the toughest on "illegal immigration". We also had race riots as little as six years ago, while a neo-fascist party won a third of the primary vote in a Queensland election just over a decade ago...
