Maybe he thinks from a religious and ethical standpoint that charging a little bit of interest is a bit wrong, but charging a lot of interest is a lot wrong? Doesn't seem to be a totally whacked out, paradoxical and absolutely illogical position to hold. It seems like the kind of position most people have on most things.

But the basis behind Islam's stance on gambling is that it's wrong because for you to win, someone else has to lose. So gambling with a guy who has very little and potentially taking the last of his money would be more sinful than gamblign against a casino where they can afford to pay it. Most reports have cited both his 'religious and moral beliefs' so I don't see how it can't be a combination of the two unless he's a full on dogmatic religious zealot. Contraceptives are apparently a major no-no for Catholics, but it seems rank and file are happy to ignore it, while still citing their faith on other beliefs. If Wonga didn't lend to people who couldn't pay the money back, they'd likely go out of business. Payday lenders get 50% of their income from fees and charges for late payments, not the interest they make such a big deal about informing peope of upfront.

Personally I prefer the more moderate religious folk who are willing to let minor stuff slide - think that's being pretty flexible and accomodating with your religious beliefs, which is what people are usually in favour of. Aren't they?

Again, 'Muslims' are not some homogenous group who all have the same beliefs and practices. No, no, it's simply not possible that he could have religious and moral objections to encouraging people to take out loans at extortionate rates of interest that could ruin their lives while thinking it does less harm to spend some of his own money in a casino. I mean, what sense would that make? it has to be absolutely all or nothing in every situation, that's what the real world's like, innit? Best continue with protracted negotiations in an attempt to get this one 'over the line', more important than trying to sign some playing staff.
