Players don’t get signing on fees any more, they get loyalty bonuses and performance bonuses paid monthly over the course of their contract. If we sell a player we must still pay the loyalty bonus. Depending on the contract that might mean that we have to pay the bonus immediately upon sale, or it may be possible to continue paying the loyalty bonus monthly for as long as necessary. A player loses their outstanding loyalty bonus if they hand in a transfer request or they may choose to renegotiate the amount the are owed to facilitate a sale. Not knowing the details of Kelly’s contract, let’s split the £150k alleged into three equal parts: Basic, Loyalty, Performance.
