Very much so, but even if we do make it into Europe with this calibre of player they are still going to be holding us back when we try and make the next step up towards where we seemingly want to be.. We need to look for players who are good enough for us now and have the potential to get better as we get closer to fulfilling our supposed ambitions. Baines would fit that mould, as would perhaps Hoyte.. If we make it into Europe we buy a top class left back who is here for the right reasons, bumo Quedrue to back up and Babayaro leaves as his contract will have run out. Sounds like a good plan at first sight but: a) will Quedrue be prepared to be a squad player? b) will buying the "finished article" not be far more expensive and risky than buying a very proming young player now who is available relatively cheaply and can develop along with the club? c) in a year's time, will Quedrue not just be the new Babayaro? Do backup players really need to be older and less motivated than the first team players? Could a) and c) not just be resolved by selling/releasing him then? If that happens. as for b) Everyone I think, certainly myself, would love Baines here, but Wigan are holding out for the kind of money that you think would be too expensive next year. Similar to the Duscher situation, Quedrue would be a short term stop gap that would solidify our squad, moving us to a better place next summer where better options will be available. We could splash out on someone now, but we will be in a better place to attract better players this time next year. Getting rid of Quedrue/Baba will be alot easier than someone we pay out alot for on a long term contract. Personally I wouldnt be very chuffed with Quedrue. But we are at a point we need to solidify the team before we move to the next level. That said theres nothing to say we wont sign Baines or similar on top of Quedrue.

Excellent, well not excellent, but glad we turned him down if he was (obviously) not good enough/decent enough shape. See, no harm done. Under previous regimes maybe there wouldnt have even been a trial, just straight to the signing. -

same as always, just paper talk. In training and enjoying it again today. Doesnt mean he wont be gone tmrw, but "talk of Martins being in London are wide of the mark." -
We will when its knocked into his own net.

He already is a leg-end, just for the wrong reasons.

Rather start the "Sell Shola and get Hunterlaar Campaign" -
Down to him and charlie to battle it out for the left wing spot. Mind you, just depends on which formation we play. 442- Competes with the Zog and possibly Milner whilst duff is out. 433- Definate option for the left hand side of a front three. Isnt good for Away games in a 442 because he is an attacker, like with Souness and Robert, Roeder wanted Luque to be alot more defensive minded. Im looking forward to seeing him over the pre season and beyond, he will definately get his chance, its all down to him now.

Anyone been watching Argentina Vs Poland? Quality match. Sergio Aguerro for Argentina looks amazing. Been a pretty open game though, Poles have played pretty well. Japan got shafted a bit earlier, Czechs went through.

id rather have duscher than butt, a better player. Aye but it's easier to do chants for Nicky Butt, isn't it. Whats wrong with "Teenage Dusch-bag" by Wheatus. That'aldo. WOO! -

id rather have duscher than butt, a better player. Before Baggio gets there, I will ask you politely. Why do you have this opinion, and how is Duscher better than Butt? Duscher is a superior DM than Butt, hes quicker, stronger and much harder in the tackle he will protect the defense so much better as he can cover the pitch quicker. only problem with duscher is that he gives free kicks away but refs in the prem are much more lenient than european refs. Fair enough, ive seen nowt of him really. Will probably find out he was never here to begin with tmrw anyways! -

All that said though, i will be disspointed if we missed out on the opportunity to get this guy. Better than Duscher and Diarra put together in my eyes, the man is a machine. http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=351489 -

To be fair I'd rather we built a stable squad with depth than fanny about with big name signings right now. We were 3 points off relegation. I know the circumstances have changed a lot this summer but I see no harm in bringing in depth. But you're not imporving on your first team, if you want to do that and add depth you bring in a better player than what you've got and push the starting player down to the bench. Yeah, but you are factoring out other points to make it a perfect world. The right players have to be available, they have to have the right mentality, There is no point buying for the sake of it or buying an ok player now that we are stuck with, when we can get an adequete stop gap and get someone alot better next year. -

Adding Duscher on a short term contract (if he impresses) will be enough to get us through the year. Whilst people are quick to write off Duscher have people seen any more of the likes of Diarra? I trust we will be in a much stronger position this time next year and can attract a better player for the DM spot then. Its not a top priority position for us at the moment. -

Babel will be the winger they have been looking for, although im not convinced they couldnt have got better for a winger. Especially at that price. To think we were talking 3-6m back in January and having doubts! -
Which positions do you think Allardyce needs to strengthen further?
toontownman replied to a topic in Football
Im confused. LB and CB are the glaringly obvious positions we are too weak to start the season without reinforcing. Although Id like a new right aswell, we could hobble along there, likewise with DM and an attacking midfielder. -
Along with Pattison they will have the PFA awards wrapped up for next year. Although he will still be a bit dejected to be pipped to the Golden Boot by Shola.

Three players that previous to Bolton had been better players than Duscher ever has and maybe will be. I cant see what the fuss is about, its just a trial for fucks sakes. We need a solid grounding and stable squad before we can attract the top class players we want. Just splashing loads of money on big name players isnt going to help the books or the squad. If its about getting a few stop gap players in for this year to solidify the team so we can attract better players next year so be it. Rather sign better players next year when we are in a better position, than be stuck with big money signings this summer that arent half as good, if that makes sense. Signing the likes of Diarra might be a better long term bet than Duscher, but come next season or January will there be a much higher calibre of player interested? Signing Duscher on a short term contract if he impresses cant be as much of a bad thing as people are making out.
