I think it’s arguable that upper body contact to be considered “not an attempt to play the ball” when it’s perfectly fine outside the penalty area. Yea I know grabbing arms and shirts are not simply upper body contact but still it looks really harsh to me.

No. He didn’t ask for a penalty. I mean he should get up earlier and tell the referee he has no intention to dive so just call a goal kick. This is to protect himself. I know the ref is fucking shit, of course I know it. What I mean is since most of the refs are shit, you have kinda no choice but to protect yourself, get up earlier and tell the ref that he doesn’t need to make any decision. Of course if you feel there is contact then just lie down and wait for the VAR. It’s very unlucky for the boy. But as a professional, you have to adapt to the new environment where the ref are fucking shit and VAR tends to make it even worse.

I am being honest, if that happens to our opponent I would say it should be a dive and yellow. The fall motion did start too late and make it look awkward to me. It could be unintentional but it doesn’t look like a normal fall. But then if it’s a second yellow then the referee should be much more cautious before handing it out. Unlucky boy. May be next time he should get up earlier and tell referee he is not asking for a penalty.

That’s my take as well. If I, or we, the fans here, are the owner, then Howe must be safe till next season. But to PIF, if the club is out of all competition after March, no hope for Top 8 finish, no upturn in performance till the end of the season, and also lose to Sunderland again, then I think that’s really when the axe will fall.
