A lot of my best memories of us are with Given in the team, so he gets a pass for me. Could've caused a fuss and left us a lot sooner, was his last realistic chance of joining a team going for the big time really and was quite obvious at that time we weren't going anywhere.

Think people need a bit of a reality check on fullbacks in general. Everyone (me included) would like two on either side both comfortable with the ball going forward, offering a threat but also solid at the back. That's very hard to find. Think Janmaat was actually very good going forward and would have liked to have seen a full season of him under Rafa to see if he could drill better positioning into him. He's no top team kind of player but Yedlin will do well to be significantly better than him.

People keep bringing up that he's a Dutch international. Much like they kept saying Anita was a Dutch international and Ajax graduate, De Jong was Ajax captain, Gini best player in Holland, even Sels best keeper in Belgium. These things really don't mean anywhere near as much as the weight some people give to them. Janmaat himself was player of the year for an actual Premier League side. So was Rob Elliot.

See he got them 10th the year before, good year in their eyes. See he took them to an FA cup final, finished near the bottom but no clear relgation battle - average year. That's why they aren't criticising much yet, they don't really pay attention to the details. When the fans really get on his back in a big majority then they'll start going with that narrative.
