Bates is complaining about us only being prepared to pay £40k a week to have Smith play for them yet he says nothing about the greedy cunt himself!  If they cant pay the other £20k a week Smith could just accept a £10k a week wage drop to play for them, but will he?, will he fuck..

Still think this could happen. Smith mightn't be ready to take a huge cut but I could imagine him being ready to knock 5k a week or so off his salary to play for his hometown club, rather than sitting doing nothing for a year.

Bates, Ashley and Smith are the 3 parties involved - if all 3 give a little bit of ground over the next 3 weeks then we may still be able to get rid

I think Bates would rather we pay them for the privilege of letting them loan Smith, arrogant little tosser.

Actually I'm more of the thinking the whole "lets go for Smith!" was a PR exercise fully knowing we'd actually want them to pay some of the wages which he wouldn't and has this nice convenient excuse at the ready.

LUFC Newcastle demands scupper Smith return

Leeds United chairman Ken Bates admitted that Newcastle`s demands scuppered any chance of former player Alan Smith returning to Leeds.

Bates speaking on Yorkshire Radio said that the club and Smith were interested in a move, "We were interested in Alan Smith. Alan Smith was prepared to consider coming to us. He was on £3 million a year and Newcastle wanted a £1 million a year contribution. As I have said before, £1 million plus government tax equals £1.15 million, we cannot afford it, it is as simple as that. The result is of course that Newcastle have a player they don`t particularly want," admitted Bates.

Smith is on the transfer list at Newcastle as he enters the final year of his contract with the club.

Leeds have been linked with the Leeds born lad throughout the summer, who came through the academy system and played a major part in Leeds success under David O`Leary.

Smith missed the pre season game for Newcastle at Elland Road at the end of July with a reported injury.

Can't see where Bates is having a go at NUFC?... Just looks like the facts with a bit of player agent encouragement via easily influenced journalist looking for a story putting the usual spin on things... Bates doesn't once state we are being unreasonable... Not sure why I'm defending him... Guess the journalist got the reaction he was looking for judging by all the mis-judged comments...

Anybody who thinks that Smith won't play this season is kidding themselves. Tiote will get suspended, go to the ACN etc and Smith will replace him. We're still fucked.

Yup.  And that's why he stays.  He knows he'll get minutes on the pitch this season, while still picking up a big wedge.

I'd hope Tiote, Cabaye, Barton, Gosling, Guthrie, Vuckic and Abeid are all ahead of him in the pecking order tbh so barring an absolutely ridiculous injury crisis there's no excuse for him, who should be our 8th choice centre mid, getting on the pitch.

can't see the ones in bold starting ahead of him in a DM role, nor barton so really it leaves cabaye and gosling...just gotsta hope they stay fit/not suspended at the right time

If the board and staff don't see him challenging for the first team spot why don't they do the same as they did with Barton and tell he's available for free? Probably wouldn't go anyway as no club is crazy enough to offer him a decent wage to rival his current contract but after all everybody says Smith is a model professional so you would think his aim is to play football...so worth the gamble definitely or is it a gable at all...

Pretty sure that is exactly what they did weeks ago (7th of June was when most press reported it).
