on saturday i put 80 pounds on Houllier to be the next manager of NUFC.the odds were 66/1.

now its 7/2 according to Skybet

Jesus christ. I take it that was before Redknapp had changed his mind? I thought I got a good price with 20/1.

5 trophies in one season. We haven't won that many in most people off this boards lifetime

No wonder the media say our expectations are too high

He will bring stability to the club he will build us to be a force again whether doing that the steady or spectacular way i don't care. Personally i would be over the moon with his appointment

Souness, Gullit and Dalglish won trophies. None of them lasted long.

It would be funny if we appointed a manager who was sacked by Liverpool for almost exactly the same reasons Sam was.

In spite of what the media would have you believe, our expectations are not nearly as high at the moment as the Scousers were then.

if houllier is in the frame i would imagine there could be some more concrete news today as he is due to leave for america to run a coaching course or something according to ssn yesterday.

I thought he was in England today doing training (ironically Allardyce is doing the same thing)~?

This is a big decision time for all of us.

Do we want the initial impact of say: a shearer/Keegan combo, and all the hysteria it would bring? It may or may not even give us an improvement on the pitch but as stated on here already, would bring an element of patience to procedings!

Or do we want the long, assured stability process which Houllier would bring?

Just spoke to my scouse mate about this and he ran through his time at Liverpool and the pros and cons of houllier.

He said Houliier started from the back, built his famous defensive triangle in Hyypia, Henchoz and Hamann. He also cleared out the spice boys. he finished 4th, 3rd, and 2nd building a strong defensive unit. It was summer 02 when he was supposed to bring in the flair players but Diouf and all did not work(hindsight is a wonderful thing!)

My mate says he brought Carragher and Gerrard on leeps and bounds, both of which stil speak so highly of the man.

He also built his team to play to owens strengths, with a big target man beside him (Heskey) who also scored 20 goals in his first season. (Vids, Smudge, Shola or even Andy C?)

Yes he made mistakes in the transfer window but I would be happy to see him make the same mistakes with us and win six trophies whilst finishing in the top4 consistently!

PS: There were rumours of his ego being quite big, silly stories about subbing Camara when the Kop sang his name and stuff, plus the fact his 'partnership' with Evans didn't work, sorta makes me think the Shearer element might not be feasable!

also if he is the one taking the back seat didnt he have a huge hand in the building of the french and liverpool academys? rumoured to have produced a player or two over the years  :shifty:

That would definitely be a good thing. Not his style to lead from the front, but rather to prop up from the back.

I think Houllier would not be the best choice - not because I don't believe he has the best track record, in fact he has a superb track record - I just feel on the managerial 'life curve', Houllier is on his way down, a bit like a Howard Wilkinson and perhaps his best years are beyond him.

Maybe that's harsh and probably not justified, just my own feeling.

However, faced with a choice between Hughes, Mclaren or Houllier.....Bonjour Gerard!

Hitzfeld and Lippi are now officially off the list then.

They were never on it mate.

Good response from the board though.

Been listening to SBR, good man.

Knew it was doubtful, but at least you can now give a legitimate and understandable reason why we aren't getting them.

Chris Mort on the new managerial appointment. (FROM the official site)

Chairman Comment: Manager Situation Addressed

NEWCASTLE United Chairman Chris Mort addresses the vacant managerial position at St. James' Park in his Black n White matchday programme notes for Wednesday's FA Cup tie against Stoke City ...

There has been a great deal of speculation in the past week over who will replace Sam Allardyce as the manager of Newcastle United. The most important thing now is to get the decision right - and lay solid foundations for the future. That is why we will take whatever time is necessary in making the decision.

This will be our first managerial appointment since taking control of the Club, and if we are going to get it right then the new manager will have to satisfy a number of criteria, which include:

- To have the team playing with the right balance of winning football and stylish football. This is probably the most difficult task. There are some clubs in the country where it is essential that the team generally tries to play football with some flair, and this is one of them.In the most difficult league in the world it is only the great managers that can combine that sort of style with winning. We appreciate we will have defeats and losing runs along the way but if the team is not trying to play football "on the carpet" as Sir Bobby Robson recently described it I think they will always struggle to win over the followers of Newcastle United.

- We would like a manager willing to develop the youth side of the club. For too long the club has missed out on too much of the young footballing talent in the region and, these days, that talent also needs to combined with young talent sourced both nationally and internationally.

- A manager that can speak English. There have been media suggestions that we would only appoint a British manager. That is not true. However, we think this is a big enough job without the manager having to operate through an interpreter, so the manager will have to be someone who is able to speak English.

- We need someone willing and able to take on, and cope with, Newcastle United. As a big club with massive potential this is a fabulous club to manage, and some of the candidates we have talked to appreciate that fact. However, we are not currently a Champions League team, and in six seasons out of the last ten we have finished in the bottom half of the Premier League. That means we are not necessarily going to interest a manger who is already at a team playing Champions League football or whose only ambition is to manage a top team in, say, Spain or Italy. We have also seen over recent months the pressures placed on Newcastle United and its manager by some of the press and occasionally by some of the supporters - we need someone who is willing and able to handle that

In other words, "no way Jose" ... which shouldn't surprise any of us anyway - he was always likely to be beyond our reach.

At any rate, I'm not convinced that the "Special One" would have worked out for The Toon, because "carpet football" was hardly his forte at Chelski.

Houllier was always my number one choice and the best manager we could attract.

As for his time at Liverpool, he took charge of a club ruined by Souness (sound familiar) and Roy Evans and transformed them back into a Champions League team, the success he had with them was better than what Sir Bobby had here which is not to put a downer on on the bloke, Liverpool were right though to move him on and brought Rafa in at the right time, the bloke took a year out of football to refresh himself and came back as good as he ever was IMO.
