The Latest reports out of Buenos Aires is that English club Newcastle United have made contact with Juan Román Riquelme, Boca's powerful playmaker, about a possible transfer in the summer.

Newcastle United find themselves in 13th position in the English Premier League, just 4 points off the drop zone. It has been said from the start of the season Newcastle lack creativity, with for instance the ageing Nicky Butt not getting any younger. Riquelme is seen as an ideal partner in central midfield given that Danny Guthrie, another young starlet at Newcastle, is ready to step up and take Butt's position in the starting line up.

The question has to be asked does Riquelme want another crack at Europe? He had a torrid time at Barcelona, but did remarkably well at Villarreal by getting them into the Champions League twice. Following a tense situation between him and Villarreal's director general and club manager Manuel Pellegrini though, Riquelme accepted a five month loan deal back to his beloved Boca Juniors in February 2007, and that is where he still remains.

Boca won’t want to lose their star man, but a fee of around €12 million euros has been mentioned as sufficient to prise Riquelme away from La Bombonera. We will have to wait and see what happens in the next few months, but many would like to see the great Riquelme have one last crack at Europe with a big club.

:smitten:

I don't care if the source is shoddy, I love them for those three words after the seasons we've had and the press taking every possible swing they can against us.

Riquelme simply will not come here. That article is such a load of bollox. Plus, we'd have to pay over 3m for him so its a no go as far as we're concerned.

But why would anyone object to him playing for us just because he's 31? He'd still the best player in our team by a mile anyway! And behind Kaka is the best CAM in the world. He's a genius.

I remember seeing him say in FFT a year or two ago that he's never going to leave Boca, so...

Riquelme would be another Veron. The game here is too quick for him and for him to be effective he needs to be the main focal point of the team. I wouldn't bother.

If droopy face Harry has read that then we can forget it, it will be Spudtastic time, we cannot have a transfer target without that boxerdog faced c*** sniffing around..

Speaking of Spurs, did they eventually sign Appiah or what?
