There's an element of paranoia in the .com article. The term 'parting shot' implies that Ashley would string things out, out of spite. I've no idea how long a sale might take, but I do believe that he's sick to the back teeth of all the aggravation and wants to get out as soon as possible. £100 million is a price that reflects his desire for a quick sale, and he's not going to go all arsey over the odd million.

Have you seen the new away top yet? That's another 'parting gift' from Ashley. I firmly believe that his intent is to set the club back by more years than he already has. Scorched Earth policy? You bet your bollocks.

www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jul/05/newcastle-obafemi-martins-for-sale

Seymour Pierce, the investment bank brokering the sale, had hoped Mike Ashley would have found a buyer by this week but sources suggest it could be another month. In a bid to accelerate the process Ashley has tried to move some high earning players on, but many of Newcastle's squad are on unusually generous pay.

To go with:

www.nufc.com

Sale could take four more weeks

News reaches us from a reliable source that Mike Ashley's parting shot could be to hold out until the start of the new season, in an attempt to squeeze a few more million out of the sale of Newcastle United.

In case people haven't seen it.

Could the Guardian not have just lifted that from .com though? I remember during the World Cup if was they who broke that we'd bid for Rivaldo, then the media followed.

In a months time, we'll be left fighting it out with the other nothing teams for the washed up players.

I know it will take time, but the more time it takes the longer we'll spend in the Championship, or God forbid drop down into League One.

anyone thinks this ends quickly is sadly deluded, the whole world knows they've got ashley over a barrel 'cause he's desperate to bail

it's gonna be a painful stumble to the start of the season

if we stay up next year it will be a fucking miracle the way this is playing out

I'm surprised shearer has managed to stay quiet through all this.  Maybe he has signed a non discloser agreement  ;D

Rob Lee said it all for him tbh

ROB LEE has warned that Alan Shearer will not sit on the shelf forever when it comes to waiting for the managerial post at Newcastle United.

The former No 9 has maintained a dignified silence since United were relegated at Aston Villa in May, but is unlikely to be appointed under wantaway tycoon Mike Ashley.

Instead, Shearer must wait to discover the identity of the club’s new owners.

And it remains to be seen if the Malaysian consortium who are believed to be leading the takeover chase go along with the widely held view that Big Al is the right man for the job.

However, with the sale of United taking far too long in the eyes of Toon fans, Lee fears the Magpies may lose out on Shearer.

Lee, one of Shearer’s closest pals, told the Chronicle: “I think at the moment he is waiting to see what happens.

“However, if it drags on for too long and somebody came in and offered a job elsewhere, he might go.

“It would be tragic to see him be a success elsewhere when Newcastle had him well within their grasp.

“Of course, the deal would have to be right, but at the end of the day he wants a crack at management and he would be very good at it.”

'whatever' on skunkers reckons Fred will have his grubby hands on the Club within the next week. He's a track record whe it comes to knowing his stuff.

If Shepherd thinks it's close (I believe the ITK), then the other bidders might be almost there too.

The problem is if Ashley refuses to accept the top offer, hoping that he can start an auction by leaking stuff like the Malaysians being shown around. That's what might take ages.

it does seem strange shearer being sooo quiet. couldn't see him being so patient if he didn't know something.

I never got my hopes up, we've heard nothing over the past few weeks that we haven't heard a million times before, it was bullshit then and it's bullshit now. We're fucked and people are going to have to get used to it.

I'm pleased we've heard nowt from Shearer tbh, because until a takeover it's only ever going to be bad news.

Can't remember ever hearing of people being shown around the facilities and meeting players last time he tried to sell.  Can't remember hearing anyone had completed due diligence.  Can't remember any solid claims of bids either.

It could be that Shepherd's is the only definite offer on the table, and Ashley is keen to find an alternative buyer. Shepherd would therefore be anxious to use all his connections to crank up the pressure on Ashley.

We shouldn't be so desperate to end the impasse that we'd be happy with Freddie. It was difficult to get rid of him before, and if he has sole control of the club, it'd be virtually impossible. The consequences of a hasty decision now could last for a long, long time.
