Llambias to miss friendly amid talks on takeover

Jul 9 2009 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

NEWCASTLE United managing director Derek Llambias is expected to steer clear of the Magpies’ first friendly of the summer as he focuses on the sale of the club.

Toon tycoon Mike Ashley is also not expected to be present in Dublin, where the black-and-whites will be represented at boardroom level by football secretary Lee Charnley.

United are understood to be working with the Malaysian consortium who visited Tyneside for a second time this week.

But despite the fact that the start of the Championship season is less than a month away, the pace of the sale is expected to continue at a lethargic rate.

Ashley’s PR man told the Chronicle today: “It has been well documented that bids of £100m have gone in and that we are still in the hands of lawyers

“There continues to be interest in the sale of the club.

“And Keith Harris at Seymour Pierce is working very hard to go through the process of selling the club.”

Fans cruelly had their hopes raised in the last 24 hours after an internet hoax got out of control last night. It was claimed that Hong Kong-based investors were ready to bring in Gianluca Vialli as director of football and Alan Shearer as boss, along with a string of other exciting incentives.

However, this has turned out to be a complete wind-up which was first generated in cyberspace on Saturday night.

That did not stop some national newspapers falling for the trick although club sources confirmed today that there is no truth in the claims whatsoever.

What the f***s taking so long? If the bids match the selling price, surely Harris just has to advise Ashley which one to take. He's had nearly a month to check out the consortiums so he should have a good idea who the best ones will be.

Ashley has a PR man???

In light of the Vialli stories coming out, can we not just now delete every rumour that has since been heard or written about and assume that not a single person outside of the club has any clue what is going on

I think that's a pretty safe bet. The level of some of the sports journalism is shameful.

Did a double-take on that last bit. Would be proper funny if Lee Ryder just went postal and put something like that on the back page of the Chronicle.

I'm not convinced the people inside the club have any more of a clue.

Probably cause it's all going on in London (if anything).

Do we not have a snitch in London ??

Got that sinking feeling that the club won't be sold and we are stuck with Ashley who just isn't interested any more.

Probably for the best tbf. Better the devil you know as they say.

/What the hell is wrong this club. :weep:

it says a lot that when the mackem's want a laugh, they pull a joke on their rivals (rick parkinson). yet we just do it to ourselves out of self-depreciation.

having said that, we should make up a rumour on the spot and see how far we can take it....

Just got a text, apparently there's been a press conference tomorrow at 3, Malaysians, Shearer with Vialli and Beckford next week. Sounds good to me.

Headline on the back page of the sun tomorrow.

takeover enquiry

Jul 9 2009 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

AUSTRIAN-based online gaming company Bwin are understood to have made enquiries about the purchase of Newcastle United.

The public limited company, who are also major sponsors of La Liga giants Real Madrid, are spearheaded by gaming tycoons Manfred Bodner and Norbert Teufelberger.

Bwin also have links globally throughout the world of sport, with Serie A side AC Milan also in their stable.

The company, who were formed in 1999, are believed to be putting together a package to meet Newcastle owner Mike Ashley’s £100m asking price.

The Chronicle understands that Bwin were at one stage earmarked by the current regime as sponsors of the Magpies next season when their deal with Northern Rock runs out.

Managing director Derek Llambias has solid links within the gaming industry due to his involvement with swanky London casino 50 St James in the capital and is understood to have been in contact with Bwin.

However, it is no surprise to see Bwin linked with a bid to the purchase of United, with their brand making huge strides in recent years.

Not only have they secured major sponsorship deals with Real and Milan, but they also sponsor the Portuguese League.

One of the bi-products of Bwin, PokerRoom.tv is advertised on US TV networks including ABC.

A Bwin official told the Chronicle: "As a rule we do not comment on rumour or speculation."

However, a source close to the company said: "It’s no surprise that Manfred or Norbert have been linked with this.

"If they were spotted in Newcastle it’s not a big deal, because they could be there one day and on the other side of the world the next.

"Their links to global sport are there for all to see."

Llambias is expected to steer clear of the Magpies’ first friendly of the summer on Saturday as he focuses on the sale of the club.

Toon tycoon Mike Ashley is also not expected to be present in Dublin, where the black-and- whites will be represented at boardroom level by football secretary Lee Charnley.

As well as interest from Bwin, United are understood to be working with the Malaysian consortium who visited Tyneside for a second time this week.

Slightly off topic of this thread but with the sale of the club up in the air and frankly nee fucker having a clue if/when it will occur it looks like we have to face the possibilty of being stuck with Fat Mike.

The majority concensus seems to be agreed that Shearer is the best realistic option in our current state, however he is unlikely to be installed even in the short-term by the Ashley administration.

With this comes the prospect of Chris Hughton and Calderwood remaining in charge for the foreseeable future. Bearing this in mind would people rather see Joe Kinnear return in the short-term or remain with Hughton/Calderwood?

In 2 minds about this as seeing Joe reinstalled would indicate the sale of the club is going nowhere and we could well be stuck with him for the season (health permitting). Whereas having the Hughton/Calderwood combo still gives us the hope that we could be taken over at anytime and Shearer installed.

However as bad as Joe was he was still better than the Hughton/Calderwood combo (taking away the West Brom result) and if the sale isn't going to happen he may well be the better (and only!) option, as Shearer isn't going to be installed and no manager will come into a club in absolute limbo.

In summary Kinnear or Hughton/Calderwood? Views? And to those saying neither please give realistic alternatives in the scenario of no-sale in the near future.
