And if Shepherd (left) persuades owner Mike Ashley to accept his offer it will mean Geordie legend Alan Shearer will stay on as the Magpies' manager. The initial indications from the Ashley camp are that there is no objection to Shepherd taking charge as long as a price can be agreed . And while neither party will comment on the takeover move because of confidentiality clauses, talks will take place on Tuesday which look like returning Shepherd to the chairman's office on the fifth floor at St James' Park. It is understood that Shepherd's consortium consists of himself, son Kenneth and wealthy overseas investors. Ashley put the club up for sale for the second time this season eight days ago, telling associates that he was looking for a quick sale at £100m. Do the bold bits not contradict each other? Guest fraser
Keith Harris says: • Relegation decreases value but this makes it more attractive • 'Cleaning up' of players needs to take place • There is real and decent interest, 'good gritty' interest • Could say there is an auction for the club • Is a huge club, infrastructure is in place • Somebody can take a view this club belongs in the top 7 and act accordingly • There are 2 or 3 interested • All seriously interested parties who have finance and are fit and proper assess the value of the club to them and bid accordingly • Individual bids are assessed • May be a bidder from this country • Said he didn’t know who the bidders are (didn't believe this bit) • Little to say on Shearer except the usual is local and charismatic. Whether he’s the right man is something that other people will express a view on but he is a good commercial addition; the most important thing is results though. • Too early to say what the bidders think about keeping Shearer • Ideal to sell by the end of June with a view ot transfers and return of players to training
