Sheffield United keeper Paddy Kenny faces a lengthy ban for failing a drugs test in a vital play-off match.

The Republic of Ireland star has been found guilty of taking a ‘banned’ substance in a medicine before the semi-final play-off with Preston at the end of last season.

Both A and B tests revealed Kenny failed and now he and the Blades are awaiting the verdict  - and punishment. He could be banned for between six months and two years.

United have suspended Kenny - who has just signed a lucrative new £1million-plus deal  - while the issue is settled.

Insiders claim Kenny only used the medicine because he was feeling unwell. He bought it at a chemist’s rather than using the club’s medical team.

Sheffield United refused to comment last night.

Not sure if it warrants a new thread, but this could potentially be good news for us. What an idiot though!  :idiot2:

I bet his ban won't be as long as Rio Ferdinhand's who only missed a drugs test, stupid FA.

Makes sense. Otherwise they would just not take them and get a smaller ban.

Probably an innocent mistake.

If he genuinely wanted to performance enhance, there are so many things that he could have got away with due to the poor standard of doping control in football. Many footballers more guilty than Paddy Kelly out there, you just don't know who they are as football authorities wont try to catch them.

Why the fuck do they do it?

On the other side of the spectrum, earning thousands of pounds a week and not taking cocaine.  How don't they do it...

This man knows the score.

Heroes of self-restraint, the lot of them.

For me, most cases are like this. I see it as Kenny not wanting to enhance his performance, but being stupid by leaving himself exposed to the risk, through going outside of the club's medical service.
