Gary Neville to spend testimonial cash on supporters' club

The proceeds of Manchester United defender Gary Neville's testimonial match will go towards a new supporters' club and hotel, he has confirmed.

Neville, 36, wants the development to be built near Old Trafford, just off Sir Matt Busby Way.

He is due to apply for planning permission later this year, in the hope the complex will open in time for the 2013-14 season.

United are due to play Juventus for the testimonial on 24 May.

Neville said he wanted to "create something special for the fans".

'Positive for Beckham'

"I obviously want to say thank you for the way in which they have behaved and treated me in the past 15 to 16 years," he said. "It has been unbelievable."

The supporters' club, by the Manchester Ship Canal, would host up to 1,500 fans on match days.

"I hope they can go in there, drink, sing and have a good time," Neville said.

Artist's impression of Gary Neville's planned hotel and supporters' club Neville hopes the club and hotel will be open for the 2013-14 season

Manchester United's chief operating officer, Michael Bolingbroke, said: "This is a very exciting project and the club wishes Gary every success with it.

"The location will give fans a great view of their favourite stadium and the design of the building will greatly enhance the skyline of the area."

Neville said he was looking forward to the testimonial and was "confident" the so-called Class of '92 would get back together for the game.

Nicky Butt, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have already confirmed they will be playing.

He is also in contact with David Beckham, and said: "It is looking positive but we still have a couple of things to sort out."

Neville is also planning a project in Malta, where he has had links for many years.

Nice of him to "donate" the proceeds to his business project. Puts Shearer and other players testimonial charity donations to shame.

Never got why teams arrange testimonials for the middle of the season, or in this case 4 days before one of the biggest games in their recent history. I know it'll be a light knockabout but still, surely they could've waited until after Barca?

Edit: oh, seems it'll be some of the ex-players.

HOLLOWAY: PL WANTS US RELEGATED

Posted 18/05/11 15:42EmailPrintSave

Man. Utd v Blackpool. Click here to bet.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway has claimed the Premier League would be glad to see the back of his team if they lose their fight for survival at Manchester United on Sunday.

Holloway is furious at claims United could get fined if Sir Alex Ferguson fields an understrength team and Blackpool secure top flight survival by becoming the first team this season to win at Old Trafford.

Not only does Holloway feel it undermines his own team, he is also indignant at the suggestion Ferguson is not bothered about finishing the Premier League season on a high note.

And he is coming to the view that the game's authorities do not want him around.

"They will be relieved if we lose and get relegated," said Holloway. "Then I am not badgering them.

"I am so annoyed. Sir Alex Ferguson is a winner. He would never dream of not being interested in winning any match.

"That man deserves to pick whatever team he wants to pick. No one should question it.

"Look at his record. Those people running the game, what planet are they on? They must have beamed down from planet Zarf. They are not in the right world.

"They think we can only beat Manchester United if they are weak. What a load of baloney. Unfortunately, that is what we are dealing with."

Holloway added: "Already, they are saying Blackpool can't beat them. I am glad I don't go to work thinking that, otherwise I would never have got promoted last year.

"I would have been relegated from the Championship because that is what everyone said was going to happen.

"That attitude offends me. It upsets me on a personal note about my club and definitely on a Manchester United note. How dare they talk about Sir Alex like that? Haven't they seen his hairdryer? Haven't they seen how successful he is.

"Ask Schalke if they think Manchester United have a weak team.

"On Sunday, we have to try and do the impossible. It's got to be perfect. No one else has beaten them. And if we do, they might get fined because we are rubbish."

If Holloway has not had enough to contend with this week trying to get his head round a situation where Blackpool could win and go down on Sunday, or lose and stay up, there have also been contracts to sort out.

Due to the nature of the deals Blackpool got their players to sign last summer, most required formal notification by this weekend about whether they were staying at Bloomfield Road or not.

Ian Evatt and Keith Southern have already been given new contracts, Brett Ormerod is still negotiating his, whilst Stephen Crainey, Matthew Gilks and David Vaughan have rejected the initial offers.

"There has been no leeway," said Holloway.

"My chairman has done the bare minimum at this moment. If we stay up they will have a chance to negotiate better terms.

"It is slightly demotivating. I guess this weekend will see if I am any good as a motivator."

He speaks the truth, though: "On Sunday, we have to try and do the impossible. It's got to be perfect. No one else has beaten them. And if we do, they might get fined because we are rubbish."

It's blatantly what will happen if Blackpool win.

He's not speaking the truth though.

This whole "God everyone hates us, everyone wants us relegated, we never get penalties or big decisions because we're shit" attitude is pissing me right off.

He's making Steve Bruce's whinging look like nowt ffs.

How can you call it a weakend team if its the same one that you played in the Champions League semi-finals, and they beat the Schalke 5-1?

Because it would be Blackpool that beat them, and Blackpool are "shite" in the eyes of the FA and most of the general public. There'd be no "Well done Blackpool!", just cries of "Man Utd helped Blackpool stay up, cheating cunts!"

Manu would be daft playing any of their starting XI for the barca game against Blackpool. No fine the fa will hand out over this is worth risking injury to key players.

I fully expect youngsters and utter dross like Michael Owen will play against Blackpool and Manu should rightfully be allowed to field whatever team they feel like, or what's the point in having a manager? Might as well get the fa to do it for us all.
