Would this not have to be agreed by the council or something? Considering Newcastle United don't actually own the stadium?

We do own the stadium. We lease the land off the council.

Ah right I see, I thought it was the stadium that they owned.

I would reckon that given Llambias' affiliation with casinos etc that both the stadium and shirt sponsor will end up being gaming companies. There was something in the Chronicle in close season if I recall rumouring about Bwin being interested in a takeover, but Llambias denied this and there was some mention of discussing shirt sponsorship. I very much doubt that we'll see Sports Direct on the front of the shirts, but I wouldn't put it past the fat bastard to sign some long term naming deal on the stadium as a parting gift before he finally sells up.

I'd hate as much as anyone to see the name St James Park disappear, but I'm sure that there will be a long line of companies interested in this. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that a company could just tag their name to the beginning and retain St James Park in the title, kind of like Bwin St James Park. Not an ideal scenario but better than losing our identity altogether

Summed up perfectly in just a couple of sentences:

Why all football fans should care about Newcastle's stadium name

By Ian Winwood

Did you hear the one about Newcastle United wanting to sell the naming rights to St James’ Park?

Oh, I can’t be bothered. Insert your own punchline here.

Or don’t.

Instead understand that selling the name of a stadium, any stadium, is yet another galling step toward the total corporate hell that modern sport is now becoming. It might not sound like much, but like Manic Street Preachers once said: if you tolerate this your children will be next.

Or, the name of your club itself.

Sweet dreams.

Ashley makes Shepherd look like a f***ing saint.

Maybe.

But Shepherd is still rightly remembered as the maker of some of the most lunatic manager appointments

But at the same time all of which had track records of winning things elsewhere or over achieving. Ashley appointed Joe Kinnear and Chris Hougton. Ashley has done so bad he's making me forget the bad things FS did.

Fair enough we wont use the new name for the stadium but the rest of the country will after hearing people like Richard Keys saying stuff like "And we're live from Mike Ashleys Chocolate Factory after the break". Gonna be awful.

He also appointed Keegan.

New names can only really work if the ground is pulled down and rebuilt elswhere IMO. This would have no chance as nomatter what the official anouncement was I expect we would all carry on calling it St. James pk.

Wouldnt we?

Radio 1 just said that there's a chance that it will be called something like ''Sports Direct Park''.

Surely, that would just be Ashley selling it to himself?

It would be silly of him, it would be free advertising for himself, if he wants to generate money he needs sponsorship from an outside source.

Then again............

But would it ? He would be moving money from another business he owns part of to a business he owns all of. it's not like he's using his own cash and he would get fantastic advertising.
