World on alert Germans marching again!

Recommended Posts

Erm, eeeh? Why exactly is it we are so confident again?

Germany coasted the qualifications, and managed to carry some semblance of that through to the WC itself. They've got a young exciting team, if only lacking in experience. Their defence is their biggest weakness, but by no means a shambles. But essentially a team, united, and wanting to stamp their names in German history. Us on the other hand...

We coasted the qualifiers also, but then self-destructed come the WC. We also have a team of eternal let-downs in an England shirt, coupled with disharmony in the camp. Never mind not one good performance in the tournament thus far.

The fucking bitter bastard Scots up here at work today were right today, we fucking are (as England fans) a bunch of deluded tossers. One average performance and we think we're going to beat, more or less, the World Cup masters. Never underestimate the Germans. Never. Just a shame we never learn this.

I was excited and confident, because I just assumed the fans, media et all had the wind knocked out them. Expectations well and truly lowered, fighting the Germs as the underdogs. Pressure off, and that. But no, one pitiful 1-0 victory over a rather average side and our over-inflated collective confidence comes rushing back. Set to fall flat on our arses, yet again.

I'm genuinely shocked, by the way, that anyone can be overly confident we're winning this one.

Aye, fuck optimism. We're useless and should just accept it without even considering victory. Robotic Germans will win.

Optimism. It's nowt to do with that, man. You basically spent a week dismantling the England team prior to the Slovenia game, suddenly you think we're going to win?

I'm not saying we can't win, it's just those that are claiming some how we should be winning this. That the German team are somehow shit. It's balls.

For "lacking experience", there are alot of the German players who played in the semis four years ago.

Friedrich, Mertesacker, Lahm, Klose, Podolski, Jansen and Schweinsteiger. Bar Jansen (32 games?), none of these have less than 65 games for Germany.

It's only in goal they lack experience.

Got to agree with Bluf.

Maybe I watched a different game yesterday when you played Slovenia? Yes it was better than against Algeria, but you still struggled to put much of note together and ended up beating a very poor team 1-0 without looking particularly great.

By all means be optimistic, I actually think you'll beat the Germans if you get your act together and start playing like you're capable of. But if you play like you have so far in the tournament you'll probably get your arses handed to you tbh.

They have a young midfield. The midfield three who aren't Schweinsteiger have less than 30 caps between them.

It's all confidence with England though, Bluf. The ability is there, we know that and see it every week in the Premiership. The problem is transferring that form into an England shirt. It was a good performance yesterday under the circumstances, we should have won by more. That will do them the power of good.

If, massive if, they can take a bit of confidence into Sunday, it will be a close game. Play like we did against Algeria and USA and we'll get spanked. You don't know which team is going to turn up.

I thought we created a shedload of chances and only poor finishing and some terrific goalkeeping stopped us winning the group. The Germans won't do what the other three sides have and put men behind the ball and that will suit us down to the ground.

The Germans will beat you 2-1.

Cheers for the heads up Meg. I wont watch now

I can't make a prediction? What a sensitive soul.

Chill, it's just the way it sounded like you claimed the result would happen. It's funny.

Last months FourFourTwo had an interesting article on the German mentality. The title was "Q. Why will Germany do well at the World Cup Finals? A. Because they always do". It says that it doesn't really matter how much ability German players have, but they've got an unshakable winning mentality thats been drilled into them all their lives. Thats why they overachieve time and time again - they've been brought up as Turniermannschaft (a tournament team). The U21 and U17 winning sides of late have epitomised this.

Still think England will win though  :pow:

I know we're shite man! I don't actually think we're going to win, but we've got a chance ffs - especially the way this tournament has panned out.

They also had three good chances that they should have scored, which would have, obviously, turned the slender 1-0 lead on its head.

Everywhere I've read, or people I've spoken with, reckons England were pretty average yesterday.  Just a hell of a lot better than the first 2 games.  We made chances, but there-in lies our problem.  We couldn't finish them.

Same wave-length here then.

If it wasn't for the result against a slightly less than average 10-man Aussie team, I think this WC group would have been seen as a failure for Germany.

Aye we're not suddenly the greatest team in the world because we beat Slovenia, but howay it's not exactly Bedlington Terriers vs Chelsea.

End of the day we might as well be optimistic, think we can win it, hope we go and play Argentina and enjoy the next few days because when its over its over, just ask an Italian or a Frenchie. If we get beat then fair do's, it was on the cards due to the form of England, but at least for a few days before we believed, had a good time, enjoyed the build up and thought about what could be instead of dreading the game and acting like were already beaten, because if the players go in like that, then we certainly are.

I actually agree that you'll be better suited to playing against teams that will take the game to you a bit more, but you still looked hopeless in the middle of the field at times and gave the ball away cheaply far too often (Barry being the main culprit).

Slovenia couldn't take advantage of it because they're rubbish, the Germans though have the players to make much more of those errors.

Yeah but by the same token if Klose doesn't get wrongly sent off against Serbia then they're probably through with maximum points and everyone's wanking over them furiously.

They were well on their way to thumping the Aussies even before Cahill's red as well tbh.

Agreed. I'm surprised at people pointing to the Serbia game as a poor performance for Germany. From what I saw a 10-man Germany was still the dominant team the entire game, and it was only a poor penalty and bad luck that kept them from taking away a point at least.

Don't mistake my post as an attack on optimism, cause I'm more than optimistic.  It'll be a genuinely good game, with plenty of history.

I was merely attacking the (typical) expectations based on literally thin air.
