Probably the best owners in all of sport, imo. Their track record with the Red Sox is extremely, extremely impressive.

They'll respect the history of the club, they'll have a plan to develop the stadium and increase revenue, they'll have a coherent, logical strategy to develop the club which would include not interfering with the manager/football-men and they'll not be total c***s in the way that many, many other owners are.

They're really an ideal ownership group. Liverpool have lucked out, big time.

Henry has been good for the Red Sox, but I think you're overstating it a bit.

Wonder if they'll try and unburn those American Flags...

At least in a years time when it all goes wrong they'll be able to use the 'yanks out' and US hatred flag, boards etc.. again.

I don't think so, since I'm aware of most of the things they've done for the Sox, which really are incomparable when you compare them to owners like the Glazers or Abramovich (who, while turning Chelsea into a successful team, still has to fund the club).

What do you want from owners, really? You want them to invest capital in youth, in infrastructure, in good management, in facilities. You want them to have a long-term vision for the club, you want the club to be able to survive without their money, you want them to generally be quiet and gentlemanly, be a good face for the club. You don't want them saying and doing stupid things, you don't want them interfering into areas where they don't specialise, you want them to create a proper hierarchical structure that can last many, many years. You want them to respect the history of the club and the fans, you want them to respect the city and the culture. There aren't many owners in sports that tick all those boxes, but Henry did (and continues to do so) for the Sox, which is why I rate him very, very highly.

And I think the most important thing for owners to do: bring success to the club. But still, bringing success via the Man City way might not be as gratifying as if you did it via the Arsenal way, so there's a good and a bad method to achieving success. Henry achieved success with the Sox and did it the good way (scouting, youth development, developed stadium which generated revenue that funded expenditure etc.).

Looks like a case of out the frying pan into the fire to me.  The view around the office where I work (a large investment bank) is that he doenst have the equity needed to help us to compete and that he will struggle to borrow the money needed to build the stadium.

My concern is that he simply doesnt have big or deep enough pockets to be able to help us compete with the big boys.  With him in charge we wont hurtle towards relegation as we are currently doing but we will end up becoming a mid table team with no hope of a new stadium and no hope of building a squad to match that of our rivals.

Don't you love the idea that the owners should just spend whatever it takes regardless of fiscal responsibility.  They are basically saying the owners have to do an Abramovich or they are not interested, and they have a basic right to being Top-4 and up with man U and Chelsea

The deluded high pressure front seems to have moved away from Tyneside to Merseyside.

No you're wrong there, the Liverpool fans are entitled to demand success and rich owners because they are Liverpool and used to be good. And its only right a proper that a club legend comes back to manage them, because they are Liverpool.

Completely different to how we see our team

(Full disclosure - I love the Yankees more than most things in life)

They have consistently had the second highest payroll in baseball since Henry took over. Let's not make them out to be some magical ballclub that competes with the Yankees on a yearly basis solely on youth development and shrewd trades. They had a solid core in place when Henry took over with arguably the greatest pitcher ever and one of the best hitters in baseball amongst others. NESN, the regional sports network which they own the majority of, had already been created and moved to basic cable which was the beginning of it becoming the cash cow it is today. They are also the only baseball team in New England (5.5 states to themselves), so they naturally exploded once they became successful. Even though Boston is a four-sport city, it has always been a baseball town even in the down years.

Their best move was going out on a limb and hiring the youngest General Manager in baseball history. Theo Epstein and his team were ahead of most of the league in accepting and using the new baseball stats (sabermetrics).

I'm assuming by "developed stadium" you mean the addition of the Monster Seats, the right field picnic seating, some suites, and standing room. Good ideas for sure, but they were created out of pure necessity due to the age/size of Fenway Park.

There was also a completely different expectation when they took over the Red Sox. They hadn't won since 1918; the fans were desperate to beat the Yankees and win the World Series, but they expected something to go wrong (much like Newcastle fans). The Liverpool fans will be expecting trophies from the moment they step in.

Don't get me wrong, Henry and his team have been great for the Red Sox. They have done everything they needed to do and more, but taking over at Liverpool will be a different beast entirely.

No way they go down.. it way to early in the season for league position to count for anything. They have a pair of twat owners but they will sell the club, I just do not see what all the fuss is about there to be honest.

I remember saying something similar about us in September 2008.

It's all about momentum or lack of.

Not sure how/why the media are reporting with so much certainty about these new owners when the existing owners haven't agreed to it.

cos i dont think the existing owners have a choice after 15th Oct- the banks decide. ( I think)

If this goes through are Liverpool back to being fine again?

Wonder what their fans will start whinging about then? Back to Hillsborough? Seats at Anfield aren't red enough? Dan Agger's tattoos?

I've just watched Broughton on Sky Sports.

It all seems to boil down to wording of the terms on which he came in to sell the club. He was given a free hand to process the sale, providing it wasn't for an absurdly low amount that took no account of business realities.

It's in the club's interests for the club to be sold for the lowest amount possible ie just enough to cover the debt. That way there's more money for players and building a new stadium. Of course, it's in the owners' interests for the club to be sold for the highest amount possible. So it depends on whether the club is defined as the owners' property or as a kind of longer-term community institution. It's a contradiction at the heart of every football club.

If H and G can demonstrate that the club can be sold for more money, then the Board probably is on dodgy ground. However, the Courts will not be sympathetic to the Yanks and I suspect will be looking for ways of finding against them.

And incidentally, Broughton was very evasive about the new stadium. Don't be surprised if they're looking at a ground share with Everton.

They'll turn their attention to Parky.

As for the sale and SSN's coverage, it all seems a little odd, like a power play to oust the current owners out.

At the end of the day Liverpool fans want to win the league, or at the very least be competing in the Champions League. Regardless of "stability" i can't see that happening anytime soon.

Man City will have that fourth CL spot soon and should something go wrong with Arsenal, Spurs (sadly) will be more likely to pounce on it than Liverpool.

Liverpool need to realise they are no better off than the likes of Villa anymore... infact i'd argue that even Villa have a better squad.

I wish Vince McMahon would buy them. His ventures outside of wrestling have been epic fails plus he has the best evil smile to go along with the inevitable villain image he'd get.
