Jonás Gutiérrez (now managing Club Almagro)

I'd take Jonas over any of our wingers at the club but when survival is assured he's one we can sell and try to improve on. Routledge is cheap so will always come in handy as cover next year again.

All two of them

I'd consider giving:

Routledge Nolan Tiote Barton

a go.

I think Barton's delivery from the right has been very important. Why cut our crossing potential in half when we have Andy Carroll in the box?

Because it's not like he'll be playing rugby if switched to the left? He'll still be the same player and can cut inside and cross (much like his freekicks from the left which have created a goal or two this season).

I'd love to give LuaLua a go there if he wasn't on loan/injured.

I know it was a League Two side, but he really impressed me in the Accrington game. Looked a good player and was unlucky not to score.

Shane Ferguson? Probably not ready but he's a natural left sider.

Is Ferguson a winger or a full back?

I know he played left back in the cup game v Chelsea but I'm not sure if thats his normal position.

Winger.

If you're willing to put Routledge in the first team then I'd much prefer keeping Barton in that perfect right hand role for him, and try Routledge on the left and allow him to cut inside.

I'm not sure why you're laughing. To cut inside you need that extra few seconds and Barton isn't quick or skillful enough to create those extra few seconds regularly. Routledge would be good on the left for this reason.

I'm laughing because you're talking as if I'd just suggested Barton should go play for the Falcons. It's the left hand side of the pitch as opposed to the right - I don't think he'd have that much trouble over that side.

One thing's for certain, we need another option for the LW.

We should be looking for a winger in January, most definitely, as well as a striker (obviously). Like Sewelly has mentioned since I started this post, if we could get something along the lines of a PL version of Pancrate then I'd be happy enough with that. Not expecting a superstar, but certainly someone with the ability to beat a man and with some pace about him, who can comfortably operate on either side.

Jonas is struggling and Routledge just hasn't been at all convincing. In terms of the latter: for someone so quick, it does my head in how little he effectively uses his pace. It's not even his delivery or anything that I can complain about, because he never beats his man and gets to the byline to whip a cross in. Most of the time he's putting deliveries in from deep, where he's cutting across the ball and trying to drive-fade them, and which are invariably gash anyway. Cuts inside far, far too often too.

In light of this I can see the argument for giving him a shot on the left, and I like the defensive work he puts in (I think he's excellent at working back for a winger, personally) but I tend to think the long-term answer is to bring someone in. Can't see it happening though.

This rugby analogy is very tedious. My points still stand anyway. While I understand he can still operate on the left he's much, much better suited on the right.
