On the subject of Loven-

I know for a fact this guy is not our answer for striking problems, and yes, he is a very limited player whom we need to replace in the summer if we stay up - But he was not as bad as made out on Saturday, it was a lot better performance than his one at Wigan. I agree with the "off the pace" comment, a lack of game time was evident in his play, and a Lovenkrands from his good run of form last year woud  have put away one of those chances he had. I don't remember him having 5 or 6 good opportunities, one at most. I reckon he's a better option than Ranger, because Ranger is so out of his depth, and doesn't quite have the mind yet to play in this league-

This is pretty much exactly how I feel.

:sadnod:

And he looked decent in his short spell in the PL for us before we got relegated.

At the moment I'd be more confident in Best or even Xisco to grab us a goal than Lovenkrands. As for Ranger, I think he offers less goal threat but a lot more in open play, make of that what you will.

Yep agreed. Ranger has shown promise but his finishing looks very weak in his limited first team performances.

It was actually the best I've seen Lovenkrands play this season. On the other occasions, he just hasn't managed to get involved at all. This time, he at least got on the end of two or three chances. He used his experience to time his runs well.

The trouble is, if that's his only contribution, then he's really got to take one of those chances to be worth his place. It's the Owen syndrome. If you decide to pick a specialist finisher, then they've really got to able to put at least one opportunity away.

It may be my imagination, but knee-jerk booing whenever any home team doesn't win a game that the fans expect them to win seems to have become quite widespread.

Every game is analysed in a lot more critical detail by the media these days, and the idea seems to have developed that a disappointing result must be somebody's fault. The reality is that most teams at this level are fairly evenly matched, and luck plays a significant part in how things fall.

Having watched the 60 minute highlights on Sky, it did look like we had some opportunities. The time to worry for the future is when we don't create chances in a match, not when we don't score.

I still think that Man Utd away is the only game in which the opposition have looked better than us and that has to be quite encouraging.

I also think that if Ben Arfa had played in games like Saturday we would probably have won them.

I'd tend to agree with that. Man U was the only game where we've been outclassed. Arsenal can play football of which we're not capable, but we set them problems. We were unlucky not to get something at Man City.

Really, apart from the big two, we look capable of picking up points anywhere.

We too would have rolled over the Chelsea that the mackems came up against on Sunday. Doubt we'll see them again though.

I have to say, watching Lovenkrands off the ball on Saturday was offensive. His positioning to me seemed lazy, and his effort looked very Michael Owen-like.

What could possibly give you that confidence considering Best hasn't scored a Premiership goal and Xisco barely looks like he could carve out a chance in this league (when he's played).

I don't get the Lovenkrands bashing, on Saturday I thought he should have done better with a couple of his chances, but at least he got into a position to get those chances!  No doubt that he's not good enough as a first team regular for a Premiership team that expects to stay up, however I'd still say he's our third best striker.

You can't really be serious their, a striker getting into a position to get a chance on goal and missing is wasting possession?..

"Lovenkrands ya bastad, ya should av hit that one on one with the keeper back ta Coloccini and kept possession!"

I'm leaving before I crack up.

You already have cracked up.

In the latter half of 08-09 we persevered with a striker who was very wasteful in the box and non-existent outside of it - effectively rendering us down to 10 men in games in which we needed 12. We paid a pretty high price for it, and folk want a repeat? Short memories, or just plain stupid.

Loven is a decent backup striker for a bottom half prem club, which is what we are and what he currently is. You'd think the entire league was starting 2 Drogba's up top with Torres sitting in reserve the way some people go on like.

Cringeworthy. Decent backup would be someone capable of contributing in some way.

Ignoring you useless OTT post i'm sure that Loven will prove adequate back-up throughout the season and chip in with a few goals. Take a look at who some of the other clubs have in reserve and he's realy not this inept window-licking spacka you seem adament to portray him as.

Surely the fact he's getting these chances is a good sign though, if he wasn't so rusty he would probably have stuck one of them away.

We're not exactly the most creative of teams so it's unlikely that we'll continue to make chance after chance that we can afford to waste.
