Astroblack
Those are probably the best examples. Broadening it up a bit. Are there players who started in one position and ended up in a slightly more different one? I always thought Alan Smith was a striker and then he turned into a defensive mid. triggs
Are there any examples of players who play in drastically different positions for club and country? Like Andy Robertson is Scotland's best player. Would it be better for him to play play as a number 10 and have the team built around him, or would that just be really difficult to coach and learn? He’d probably be a worse number 10 than whoever they have playing there now. Alaba started out at Bayern as a centre mid and that’s where he plays for Austria so not really the same
Guest
Those are probably the best examples. Broadening it up a bit. Players who started in one position and changed to another later on. Rob Lee. From a right-winger to attacking midfielder to more of a sitting midfielder at the end.

Wullie
Paul Warhurst's the classic example.
Guest firetotheworks
James Milner. Went from right winger to central midfielder to utility left back.
Astroblack
Thinking of players who went forward in position. Feel like it may be easier to go backward as you get older.
joeyt
Bale himself went from left back to winger/striker

Raconteur
No one's going to mention Jonas the left winger playing as right back for Maradona's Argentina (or is the asterisk too big on that one?)
Happinesstan
Wasn't Shearer put in goal when on trial at Newcastle, or is that a myth.
Incognito
Think I read Dion Dublin started out as a centre back Gordon Strachan played him at centre half many times for Coventry. Think he was called up for England during one of these periods of him playing there too.

Raconteur
There was a bit of a fad for centre half/centre forward players. Chris Sutton occasionally played at the back for Norwich and Blackburn.
Dinho lad
Zanetti played pretty much everywhere.
Dr.Spaceman
What was the centre half who did the reverse for Leicester called? Sure he scored a few late goals one month.
