That was quite frankly ridiculous. Barcelona were masterful. Man U provided no challenge, though. You could say Barcelona forced this, but Man U threatened whenever they actually got men forward. It's hard to see anything stopping this side until Xavi and Iniesta expire. I cannot remember a time in my life when one team was just so much better than everyone else.

Again, I believe tonight's game has showed how inferior the premiership is nowadays.  Our teams just aren't good enough when our friends on the continent are technically better.  Look at the uefa cup, only 1 English team has won it in last 15-20 years I believe (Liverpool in 2001).

basically, Barcelona have elevated football to a new level, and the rest of the sport needs to realise this and try to adapt and, for the bigger sides, catch up. usually big successful sides influence the future of football and barcelona haven't really done that yet.

it's like usain bolt destroying the 100m world record - it changes previously unchallenged truths and orthodoxies about what works and what doesn't. in that case it was that tall, rangy runners can't succeed at the 100m, it was powerfully built runners that coaches looked for, hence maurice green saying mark lewis francis had the ideal physique for 100m. nope.

often when a good side has success lesser sides look at them to see what they can learn from it. shit managers like souness and allardyce see what mourinho and jacquet have done on the big stage and adapt it to their level. that's not really happened with barcelona. it might be that their philosophy is so deeply ingrained in the club culture, with xavi, messi, iniesta, pedro etc working their way up, that the only way other clubs can adapt it is to start at the academy level. so it might take a few years to see how this side changes the future of football.

Whilst I have no problem with the team Ferguson picked i think he got the tactics wrong by leaving too much space between the midfield and defence. They had to press as a team or defend deep depending on the circumstance and they did neither. Was disappointed in Valencia and Henandez showed his youth. Giggs showed his age and the effect of outside pressure. Scholes was better than Carrick.

How is the Premiership inferior? They've had a team in the final three of the past four years and had two teams contest the final in 2008. I think Spain, Italy, Germany, France, etc. have better football cultures and styles of play than England, but no league competes with the top to bottom financial power of England, imo.

Credit to Rooney, btw. He really showed well tonight and in the title decider with Chelsea.

That's the thing, the Prem's success is built purely on (unsustainable?) financial muscle. It covers up a lot of problems with our game.

The usual orthodoxy in football is that a team is strong from the defence forward. Supposedly, you can't win trophies by being so good in attack that the opposition won't have enough of the ball to threaten your weaker defence.

Barca are the only side I've seen who have made that philosophy work. In that sense, they're unique.

La Liga is the most in debt league in football

My point is that outside the top 4, English clubs have done fucking woeful in the uefa cup.  That to me shows up big problems in terms if quality of the league.

England lags behind in technical ability and player development from all of the big guns. France and Germany have infinitely better financial models too.

The Premiership is the best 'product' though, right?

You can cherry pick whichever statistics you want.  Another one is that there has been at least 1 English team in 5 of the last 6 European Cup finals.

And most English teams treat the Europa League like a total inconvenience these days so what you're saying proves very little.

Best brand yes.  Doesn't mean it's the best in terms of quality though.

Disappointed. Was Giggs on the pitch? Was Hernandez on the pitch? Oh, yes, he was offside a few times.

Seriously, the midfield wasn't existent today. Evra was poor. Rooney, Vidic, Ferdinand and of course, Van der Saar are the only ones who looked like caring.

Was a Man Utd fan for 90 minutes. Being a NUFC fan feels just sooooo much better.
