Yohan Cabaye retires

Cabaye without a shadow of a doubt has superior passing/shooting technical ability than Lee/Speed had. His issues are consistency, fitness, and an inability to dribble or carry the ball effectively. But overall, if given let's say 8 seasons at St James' with at least 2/3 seasons in a quality attacking side surrounded by good movement (as Lee/Speed were), I think he'd be on a par with the both of them come retirement, albeit as a slightly different type of central midfielder.

Lee was a superb exponent of shooting/passing. Sorry but Cabaye has nowhere near the same levels of ability when it comes to shooting and passing.

Lee never had the vision to pick a pass like Cabaye did for Cisse against Stoke.

Most of Lee's shots ended up in China Town, but yes, much better vision than Cabaye, especially at close quarters while Speed was a massive goal threat in the air and around the box.

I'd have either of them over Cabaye.

He did it plenty, man. For Keegan and others.

Cabaye can't control a midfield anywhere near the way Speed could. :smitten:

Can't quite remember Lee as much (age reasons) but I'm fairly sure I'd say the same about him.

I think he could but not under this klutz of a manager, he would look a lot better under Sir Bobby IMO.

Speed was obviously the better player though.

Not sure I'd agree that Speed was better.

Speed was far, far more suited to the PL. He'd attack the ball, look to support the attack whenever he could, had a gorgeous range of passing and could tackle.

Oh, I thought he meant Speed was better than Lee. I haven't seen enough from Cabaye yet to think he's better than either.

Nah better than Cabaye mate, if you were to push me i'd say Lee is the best of the lot.

Would be inclined to agree but it's very tight. Lee did a useful job as a holding player towards the end but prior to that he was one of the best all-round midfielders in the country. 2 exceptional NUFC servants.

While true i'd have Lee's consistency and accurate passing over Cabaye's once in 4 or 5 game great pass like.

 for those who haven't got it I'd recommend the 1000 Goals DVD. You really see how good some of our players were.

Basically. Cabaye loves a hollywood ball and its great when it comes off, but its not very often, think every 4-5 games is flattering tbh.

Perhaps not but his general all-round passing was very good and he did set up quite a few goals. He was never the hollywood ball type, but when it came to passing the ball, he rarely gave it away and more often than not found his man or made a telling pass.

Fair comment, mind you when you have the tactics of Pardew to contend with, the chronic lack of movement doesn't help Cabaye.

Put rob lee in our current team and he would struggle, i think cabaye has the potential to be as good but with the current team management it's not going to happen although i would love to be proven wrong.

dont agree, think rob lee is just what this team needs - a leader on and off the pitch, and also driving the team forward with his runs. would really give the players a kick up the arse on the pitch - colo's a great guy and someone to look up to but isnt verbal enough on the pitch.

Cabaye can only dream to be as good as Rob Lee was for us.  On his day, there was no one better in the country for making those late runs, supporting the attack and grabbing goals.  Fantastic player.

The game has changed a fair bit since then. There's not many central midfielders of that ilk anymore, more specialisation.Although the "shuttler" is increasingly popular which Rob Lee would be playing today. Great energy, getting forward and back in the mould of Vidal/Marchisio/Ramires.
