Alan Pardew keen to seal deal for Fabricio Coloccini

ALAN Pardew wants to make Fabricio Coloccini his second signing of the January transfer window.

After clinching a deal for Freiburg striker Papiss Demba Cissé on Tuesday, Pardew believes “one more” new signing is likely before the end of the January transfer window.

That will be a centre-back and there has been “some progress” this week – although The Journal understands there is now no interest in Aly Cissokho or Middlesbrough’s Rhys Williams and West Ham defender James Tomkins has also slipped off the radar.

Dismissing suggestions that Demba Ba’s contract would be one of his priorities, Pardew says tying Coloccini down to a new five-and-a-half-year deal would be a huge statement of intent from the club.

The defender wants to sign a new deal and Newcastle are desperate to keep him, having offered him a basic pay bump.

However, there are slight discrepancies in the way the deal is structured, which seem to have contributed to the “cooling-off” period between both parties.

Newcastle have not received an enquiry about him yet, although they know his stellar form has not gone unnoticed.

Pardew said: “The priority for me is Coloccini’s new contract and one or two others. We are focused on that because we want to keep our best players.

“He is our captain and I want to keep him – negotiations are due to restart shortly.”

Newcastle are understood to have made enquiries on a centre-back over the last few days, but Pardew does not see another £10million signing joining in January.

While saying his target is a “very, very good” defender capable of slotting into the side, he is at pains to point out United are still seeking value in the market.

They believe they got that from pouncing for Cissé on Tuesday.

Pardew added: “I don’t think we will be signing another £10million player in this window.

“Everyone we buy we want value from and we think Cissé’s signing is good value. That is why we bought him.

“He has a great age, a great CV, he has experience and pedigree already and that makes it easier for me as a coach.”

United surprised a few with the stealth and speed with which they managed to clinch the Cissé deal.

Pardew was at pains to heap praise on Mike Ashley and managing-director Derek Llambias for the way the deal was conducted.

He said: Mike and Derek deserve a lot of credit for making this signing in this window because we had to force it through a bit at the end and I am grateful to them for that.

“We just want to make a play now when things are going well because that is the time to make a move.

“I hope we can go from strength to strength. We are trying to compete with teams who are well above us financially.

“I am not talking about Man Utd, I am talking about Liverpool.”

Pardew feels United have signed both a talented footballer and an “excellent human being” in Cissé.

He added: “Of course we checked him out, we know he is a diligent footballer.

“He does his work, goes home and does his business, charity or whatever he has to do.

“He is a level-headed guy. He looks you in the eye.

“I was impressed because, although we knew all that, until you sit down with the player you only then start to understand his character and personality. He has the right tools for this job.”

United travel to bogey ground Craven Cottage without either of their Senegal strikers, but Pardew believes their midweek signing will boost the performances of others.

He said: “I have had a nice reaction in training, which is what you would expec.

“Leon Best looked a little livelier – and Shola. Competition breeds its own commitment in players.”

Pardew's next target is already a Toon player

Published 22:30 19/01/12 By Simon Bird

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is already aiming to seal his next big-money signing... by tying skipper Fabricio Coloccini to a long-term deal.

Pardew has thanked Toon owner Mike Ashley for forcing through the £9m transfer of Freiburg striker Papiss Cisse this week, a deal which has given the club renewed optimism for a top six challenge.

Now, the priority is to keep Argentine defender Coloccini, who has been outstanding this season.

Pardew has issued a warning to rivals that, rather than sell their stars, Newcastle "want to run with the players they have got until the summer."

Although he admitted he could not "guarantee" that would happen, Pardew is confident that Ashley is playing "a significant role in bringing success" to Tyneside again - and looking forward to Newcastle pushing on between now and May.

Pardew said that Senegal international - and the new custodian of the club's iconic No9 shirt - Cisse is "good value", despite being United's most expensive buy since Coloccini arrived in 2008.

He described the new boy, currently on Africa Cup of Nations duty, as "a diligent footballer with experience and pedigree."

Coloccini also fits that mould, and while injury-hit Newcastle also want to land a new centre-half during January, Pardew said: "The priority for me is Coloccini's new contract and one or two others.

"We are focused on that because we want to keep our best players. He is our captain and I want to keep him. Negotiations are due to restart shortly."

West Ham's James Tomkins is unlikely to be the new defensive recruit after the Geordies had two bids turned down, and Lyon's Aly Cissokho has also been ruled out.

Asked whether current star striker Demba Ba could be poached by rivals exploiting a £7m release clause in his contract, Pardew said: "We have that about our players all the time. We have to react if something comes up, but there have been no scares for us.

"We want to run to the summer with all the players we have got. I do see that happening but that doesn't guarantee that. We are on our guard.

"If one Champions League team plucks from another, then one of them might come and pluck from us. You are never going to stop that."

Pardew has stressed Ashley, who is sporting a new slim-line look after losing weight, played a big role in the Cisse deal.

He added: "Mike and Derek [managing director Derek Llambias] deserve a lot of credit for making this signing in this window, because we had to force it through a bit at the end and I'm grateful to them for that.

"We just want to make a play now when things are going well because that's the time to make a move.

"I hope we can go from strength to strength. We're trying to compete with teams who are well above us financially. I'm not talking about Manchester United, I'm talking about Liverpool.

"We didn't fill the number nine shirt in the summer and there was an element of frustration because of that, especially from our fans.

"He [Cisse] plays at the top of the move, he finishes it off. He's got a great record at a lower club in the Bundesliga. He's an outstanding prospect.

"Of course we checked him out. We know he is a diligent footballer. He does his work, goes home and does his business, including charity stuff. He is a level headed guy. He looks you in the eye.

"I was impressed, because although we knew all that, until you sit down with the player, you only then start to understand his character and personality. He has the right tools for this job."

Asked whether the big buy proved Ashley was a fully engaged owner, enjoying the season and up for a top six push, Pardew answered: "The most important thing I can say is that he has made a significant contribution to the success we have already gained here.

"He perhaps didn't need to. He could have turned around and said, 'You are doing great. On you go. Carry on.'

"That speaks for itself. He has a lot of criticism while in charge of this football club. Put yourself in his position and look at the value he has had for his money.

"Some of the signings for this club, some of the faith he has put in people and has not been repaid. That would make you wary as well.

"He has had to bear the criticism for most of that. In terms of stuff off the pitch and trying to generate new income, it is like all clubs are doing. We all want more income to move the club forward.

"The Virgin Money deal was important. Would this [Cisse] deal have happened if we had not secured the Virgin Money deal?"

As for United's efforts on the pitch - they will go fifth with a win at Fulham on Saturday - Pardew says: "At the start of the season, there were some people fearing we'd get involved in relegation. I always thought we had too much quality for that.

"You look at us now with the signing of Cisse, and players like Cabaye, Santon etc. We are suddenly becoming a threat.

"If we can keep everyone fit and, with seven or eight games to go, keep ourselves in and around sixth or seventh, we will have less pressure on ourselves than the others. Then we can be dangerous.

"But we have to get ourselves in that position."

Do I read that as Best showing his up for it and Shola....well...it's Shola (He's been accused of many things, but never of being lively) ?

Smith's wages should be divvied up on new improved contracts for Coloccini, Krul, Ba and Guthrie.

Make it happen Ashley, and bring home a trophy!

Spot on!

Been saying for ages, Smith off the wage bill could be the catalyst for keeping our better players, Colo in particular.

This guy is a role model and example to his peers of how to be a professional footballer. I am sure he could easily play for any team in the world.

He would even improve Barcelona IMO.

I love to watch him play and am so pleased he belongs to our team, he is worth the enrance money alone.

A replacement would cost many millions to match in quality. Please Mr. Pardew get him to sign for the rest of his career.

Very promising on Colo. Would be my priority if I were in charge. Fingers crossed.

As for Best and Shola being more up for it/livelier (now Cisse is here)...that would p*ss me off. They should be up for it full stop. If they haven't been giving it 100%, I'd demand answers. :tickedoff:

Same thing happens to Jonas when he has a bit of competition, must be a subconscious (sp) thing.  Can't see Shola putting more effort in even if we signed Drogba, Benzema and RVP though, he'll just be a lazy sod for the rest of his days

Even though we have some top quality players, most of us realise Colo is the cement that holds it together and those in charge know that too.

Also, like you say he's a top bloke as well as a great player. He wants to stay but I think he needs to be convinced that we will be challenging top 6 level during the period of his next contract. What has happened this week must help the chances of a happy conclusion.

What worries me most is, if they can't reach an agreement. Wich isn't all that unlikely as they will make him most probably to take a paycut. Is the change of style we'll have to go through. We will never find such a centerback again.

Unlikely, the offer already on the table has a modest pay increase.

Would the club go on to increase a wage allready 40% over the wage cap? Might be estimated bonuses etc. that is, if he's on the reported 80/90k/week.
