TRon
So out of his depth that we finished 2nd, 4th, 3rd and 5th with him in the seat. Then again, the balance sheet was s*** viewing. Robson got him most of those. He is the sole reason for our success under him. Dalgleish's was lucky with inheriting a great team before royally fucking it up. Bobby was backed very well with transfer funds with the exception of one summer. We showed a lot of ambition back then. Then we ran out of money and sold up to Ashley while running away with £40m each from the deal.
Mick
Bobby was backed very well with transfer funds with the exception of one summer. We showed a lot of ambition back then. Bobby generated a load of cash by taking us to the champions league.

Very ambitious.

Cronky
So out of his depth that we finished 2nd, 4th, 3rd and 5th with him in the seat. At which point he sacked the man who had given us those three successive top five places and brought in Souness, Roeder and Allardyce.

Bobby generated a load of cash by taking us to the champions league. Cash that was primarily spent before we were even close to qualifying for it. Shepherd deserves a lot of criticism, but he wanted to make the club successful and walked the walk. Give me that over '1 or 2 signings per season' any day of the week. jdckelly
Are you blind? you can't just say with the exception of one summer and try to brush it under the carpet because that summer lead to us not getting into the CL and we haven't been back since. It was basically the beginning of the decline that eventually lead to relegation so no it can't and should not be ignored.
Mick
At which point he sacked the man who had given us those three successive top five places and brought in Souness, Roeder and Allardyce. I wonder where we'd be now if Shepherd had kept his mouth shut about Bobby leaving and had allowed him to find his replacement instead. Things would have been totally different now because that was the start of the slide, Bobby out and Souness in.

It was basically the beginning of the decline that eventually lead to relegation so no it can't and should not be ignored. Which is why I acknowledged it. We were an ambitious club that made bad decisions but always in the name of attempting to bring success and competing with the best. Totally different animal to the rubbish occupying SJP now. Not to mention the fact that under Ashley's crock of shit, Robson would have never come to begin with. But in any case Mick is right, Shepherd and Ashley are both shit for different reasons.... neither are really the answer.
Ronaldo
I'll let someone else dig up the figures, but we made plenty of expensive signings from 2000-2003 on Bobby's recommendations. He was well backed in the transfer market.
Ronaldo
Nobody saying Shepherd was or is the answer, by the way. But for NUFC he was streets ahead of what we're lumbered with now.
jdckelly
lets just make this very clear, just because Ashley is bad it does not make Shepherd in any way shape or form good or meh or bad he was horrific for the club. He was incompetent, a regular embarrassment to the club and the amount he made for himself out of his time at the club is sickening.

He was well backed in the transfer market. We made something like a £7 million transfer profit during the first year Bobby was with us, I remember him getting rid of Ferguson, Howey, Maric and Pistone for good money and I remember not believing how he'd managed to get so much for those 4. Ronaldo
We spent £4m on the likes of Bassedas alone. Over the first 4 years of his tenure he was backed very well. By the way: "he's a miracle man, the chairman." - Sir Bobby Robson, 2003.

loki679
Sick of all these filler soundbites Ryder is putting in the Chronicle, like. Couldn't give a f*** what Shepherd thinks of the club at the minute, or his 'what if' tales. Only decent one was Acuna going out the fire exit, but that's purely because I like any mention of Clarence Acuna, not because it was interesting. Didn't he get arrested coming over the Tyne bridge dressed as Captain Hook or something?
