It’s all complete bollox. I would prefer a rule where if the ball hits the arm/hand of a defender in the box , it’s a penalty. Full stop. Would this be unfair sometimes? Yes, but I’d accept that for consistency.

Likewise, a defender grabs a shirt in the box, penalty. I see it happened again to Wolt against Arsenal. This would never be unfair IMO.

The rule is this:

"HANDLING THE BALL

For the purposes of determining handball offences, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit. Not every touch of a player’s hand/arm with the ball is an offence.

It is an offence if a player:

deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball

touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised

scores in the opponents' goal:

directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper

immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental"  - https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-12---fouls-and-misconduct

In most cases deliberate handball is fairly obvious. As is scoring immediately after handling the ball or off their arm.

The real judgement part is whether someone's arm has made their body unaturally bigger. That's usually the dispute, whether:

"the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation."

Well there you are then. That covers both from the weekend.

Fulham player dives across the box with a trailing arm. He took the risk of his arm blocking a shot which it duly did. Penalty.

Gabriel likewise.

Not sure how VAR has made things worse but it has. Every other sport with video tech gets the correct decisions but football someone fucks it. We've been fucked over by its in 3 games this season, costing us 6 points. Then Everton lose a key player as the refs are giving out yellows for a quick free kick, yet Arsenal are constantly trying to rip Dan Burns shirt off and its play on.

We forget fast in football, but the start of the season has been the worst I have seen. Its three/four/five shocking calls every round.

Take the overturned pen on Sunday, the ref is standing around for 90 seconds wating for VAR to ask him to look at it. Why not just run straight over and quickly check it, save us all the faff. They do it in Rugby where all the officials chat through it and the on field ref makes the final call. I'm sure if the on field ref see's big nick getting hit in the face its a sending off.

I think I’d rather have no handball than have a handball for every contact.

With you on the shirt pulling though

They just shouldn’t ask the on-field ref at all. Either have constant communication like rugby, or just make the VAR able to correct any mistakes.

For a start, the cunts in VAR need to not be referees.

The whole point of VAR is that it's as close to an objective/impartial view of on-field events and it's been clear as day this is never the case. The general public with a bit of training could do far better than this shite.

It took a horrific amount of time for what they were checking which was if Pope had played the ball or not. It shouldn't be taking what seemed like 4 minutes to work that out and shouldn't need the on-field ref to go to the monitor at all.

He's not wrong

Think him getting booked was the worst decision of the entire weekend.

Block tackle which clearly wins the ball. But on tue follow through after making the tackle his boot has come down and lightly landed on his opponent's foot.

Complete horseshit.

Because referees don't like it and never wanted it.  VAR undermines their belief that they're the infallible god on the pitch who don't make mistakes.  Then along comes VAR and shows that they do make mistakes.  Constantly.

When every change that referees suggest makes VAR worse it's because they want rid of it.  They want it to fail.

The fact that they don't even send the ref over to the screen for those ones makes it even worse. No idea how he kept his cool as the ref ran past after ruling it out.

That''s what I don't understand, I thought the ref was supposed to be sent to review the decision. If he had surely he'd have just stuck with his original decision of goal?

The ref only goes to the screen if the decision is subjective. For "matter of fact" decisions like offside and handball the VAR official makes the call.

I mean even if another angle shows it touched his finger, it can barely have grazed it, the ball's trajectory didn't change at all. It's totally inconsequential.
