Was it worth it starting him on that plastic pitch? Not using this to take a swipe at Pards, but we've seen this way too often with Newcastle over the past decade... players being rushed back too soon or too making them do far too much on their first / second games back, instead of letting them blood back in slowly. Disgusting, that he's out for the season. FFS.

I agree it seems pretty daft to start him out there but as none of us are qualified to comment we can't then start slating the medical team (not saying you are mate - others have been in this thread) The medical team might have followed protocol to the nth degree, checked scans, done the tests on him in training and all of it pointed to a successful return.

Only when a player goes back into full speed action will you really know how they're responding or more to the point how the area reacts afterwards. It's taken a specialist to suggest surgery and it sound to me like whether it was a plastic pitch or grass, a 20 min cameo or a 40 min appearance, the situation was going to rear it's head anyway if its to the extent that surgery is required.

Blessing in disguise? Season almost over. He goes away to recover. We extend contract for 5 years.

Comes back rested/strong for a very important season next year

He could be out for a lot longer than this season. It might be he's out for this year.

Based on what, your own monotonous negativity?

Based on the fact he's been fucked for 6 months or so already and he's starting from scratch again. I understand fully your disappointment and frustration but prepare for the fact he could and probably is going to be a long term absentee.

Lets hope not though.

He hasn't been f***ed for 6 months or so already though has he  He got injured in November and if he's out for a full 6 months from now (it may be less) that's mid September. I'm realistic about his injury I just think you've taken an overly negative reaction to this and exaggerated things.

A shame, but we've done fine without him. Losing him last season would've been devastating. The Sissoko and Gouffran signings plus the emergence of Marveaux this season have really cushioned the blow from losing HBA.

Have we? We're (potentially) 6 points above relegation ffs.

And we struggle as ever to create anything offensively, even with Sissoko, Gouffran and Marveaux (at least most of the times).

It's a massive loss tbh.

We've managed to make it to the quarterfinals of the Europa without him and our fortunes in the league have improved tremendously since the new signings.

Not saying he's not an important player for us, but we can weather the loss just fine.

Tbf we have only lost 2 in 10 games in all competitions since the new signings, the blow of him missing has been lessened with the new signings.

Starting to look more like a permacrock to me. Hope it isn't the case but he's looking like he's made of glass.

I don't know how the decision tree worked for HBA starting away at Anzhi, or indeed if all possible roads would eventually have lead to him needing further surgery, but...

...I've never seen a player start for 60 minutes away from home in sub-zero temperatures on a dodgy surface as their return game back from a lengthy layoff.

I'd love to hear Pardew's explanation, but I doubt we will.

Anyway, this fucking sucks.

I don't care how long it takes I want to see him in black and white again dancing past defenders, even if he does get injured a lot. Would be horrible to sell him.

Having said all that definitely another winger needs to be bought in summer

However, Ben Arfa – who Pardew hoped would be ready to start against Anzhi Makhachkala in next Thursday’s Europa League clash in Moscow – is a “long way off where he should be”, according to Pardew.

But that won’t stop Pardew taking the France international to South Wales.

“I’m always tempted to take Hatem,” Pardew said. “If his leg was in half, I’d still be tempted to take him.

“But he isn’t ready – our fans need to understand that. He’s a long way off where he should be because of the extent of the injury.

“We’re trying to push him, but we’re also taking care of him. It’s a delicate balance. I thought, possibly, he could start on Thursday. I’m doubtful about that now.

“But I could take him to Swansea and use him in a cameo role. Playing five or 10 minutes, when we might need a goal, ain’t the same as playing half a game, let alone a full game.”

If you can look past the confusing bullshit and numerous contradictions that's as near as we'll get.

Should have eased him in with sub appearances, massive gamble and its backfired.

£25m + Carroll? Yes please.

I'd rather rake my eyes out with a spoon.

Bet you Carroll scores more goals than him next season. Plus + £25m spent on replacing a massive crock.

Apart from the very high likely hood that he won't i would rather rake my eyes with a spoon than see Ben Arfa at Liverpool.
