Can't believe that there are actually (presumably intelligent) people on here who believe that the casino picture was the game changer. It's incredibly over estimating the importance of fan's perception of a player's religious conviction to the player himself. Cisse's not going to go, "Shat now they've seen my casino picture, Dave and Toon Taylor will know I'm not a good 'Muslim', so I better back down".

He had a believe (and it does not matter that the many Islamic experts on this board thinks its hypocritical) that he could not advertise Wonga and yet his conscience allowed him to play in casino. It does not matter what his rationale is, it doesn't matter if this means as a Muslim he will go to hell. All that matters is just that this was his believe.

Now he has been persuaded presumably by a combination of Pardew, PFA and perhaps some Muslim folks in the community that wearing Wonga is not too big a deal, he has decided to compromise without getting any financial gain and we should just draw line under this sorry episode and get him match fit.

Besides if all he wanted was a pay rise or engineer a move away, he did not need to use religion and probably would not have compromised. Get over it, players don't really care what fans think of them certainly not whether they are a good or hypocritical Muslim.

The true test of his attitude will come when he starts playing, he has already lost about three weeks which could have been totally avoided if it was handled correctly, can you imagine Bobby Robson letting it drag on for so long ?

I'd rather imagine what Bobby would achieve with this squad compared to Alan.

Then again thats a fairly depressing thought about our current circumstances

Was he the only player observing Ramadan?  Could this whole thing not just be him staying due to Portugal not being the ideal place for an athelete training during Ramadan? Ain't got a clue but every story I've seen about this wonga dispute haven't had many sources?.

My turn... He got into a massive gambling debt and had to turn to pay day lenders. Next...

Because our club do not communicate it leads to all sorts of speculation. Would save them a load of hassle if they just told the truth

Had that thought myself, the "sent to train alone bollocks" story was due to special regime he was working through because of Ramadan, with the work being done with the new fitness guru, which by reports has been extremely intensive, not the best thing to be doing with no food or fluids during the day at the best of times, never mind in the heat.

can't see how it would have helped anyone except a load of internet fishwives in this case, going public would have backed people into corners and potentially led to perceived ill feeling between the parties, making a resolution much more difficult

also it's feasible wonga requested the club to keep quiet so as not to publicly confirm that our #9 has a problem with our main sponsor, they've got plenty of bad press as it is

my only beef with the whole thing is it may have clouded our pursuit of new strikers but even that's total guesswork, it may not

It was a complex situation which we've seemingly resolved behind closed doors. Making it public might have made things even more complicated.

Edit : mojo's first paragraph phrases it much better.

Assume its been mentioned without trawling back but if true the club did well to bring in a Imam to talk him through the situation and try and find a compromise. Glad its all resolved and we can get him on the pitch and ready to watch City tear us apart from the halfway line

The archbishop of Canterbury was forced to admit on Thursday that the Church of England holds a more than £1m investment in one of the main financial backers of Wonga, the payday lender the Most Rev Justin Welby had promised to compete "out of existence".

Religion, yes :spit:

One thing they seem good at is making all these players feel welcome around the place.

This is just as full of unsupported assumptions as anyone else's guess. In the end what matters is that he's still here and presumably will be playing. That a good thing.

Well Darren Lewis from the Mirror was claiming on Sky Sports this morning that it was because their journalist (not Simon Bird) published the story and photo that they helped to create a resolution to the dispute!!!

Hope Pardew realises that Papiss is one of the best players at the club and we start playing to his strengths. We need him and Ben Arfa to be the main focus in our attacking game, do that and we've got a chance to have a decent season.

Why not? We've got enough muppets on here doing the same thing, so I say let them have it. It's scant consolation that he hasn't left for some of them I suspect.
