Martin O'Neill has reignited his row with Alan Pardew, questioning the Newcastle manager's accusation that Sunderland had been overly physical in a tempestuous Tyne-Wear derby last Sunday.

Two players were sent off for the visitors and eight players from both teams were shown yellow cards. Andy Woodman, the Newcastle goalkeeping coach, was sent to the stands at half-time in a volatile game.

"The half-time stats are a total contradiction to what their manager said," O'Neill claimed yesterday. "They've twice the number of bookings we have, and twice as many fouls. You think you've watched the game, given a reasonable analysis, and then you hear the opposition manager saying that Sunderland had a game plan to upset them, to unnerve them, to basically – and he used the word 'ugly' – attempt to kick them off the pitch.

"Lee Cattermole was booked after a minute and a half and quite rightly so too. The second foul was committed by ourselves when [Jonas] Gutierrez goes by Seb Larsson and Phil Bardsley after three and a half minutes.

"We didn't commit another foul then for about 17 minutes, during which time they conceded seven. It's not a case of taking the moral high ground, but putting across what I felt during the course of the game was almost entirely the opposite of what their manager was saying."

O'Neill also questioned Cheick Tioté's part in the dismissal of Stéphane Sessègnon.

"Sessègnon deserved to be sent off the pitch, because he raised his arm in retaliation," added O'Neill. "He's flung an arm back in the manner that, if the referee sees, he has no option but to send him off. Tioté, this 'hard man' of the Premier League, has clutched part of his anatomy that was not even touched. He's gone down two and a half seconds after the incident, and rolled around 14 times."

Not only is his opinion completely and laughably wrong, he can't even get the facts right - it was 30 seconds in, man.

aye, the same challenge later in the game would have been a straight red as well

It was the signing of John O'Shea that really put the frighteners on me TBH.

Was thinking yesterday how it's pretty amusing that O'Neill WILL continue his disastrous transfer policy and they've already got a head start by giving long contracts to O'Shea and Brown

Everything they're saying now just makes them look more and more petty. At least Pardew admitted he didn't behave well.

why has nobody pointed out, MOn gets praised for his enthusiam when he does very similar every game. If you look on google images of him, you find a few pics of him in similar square ups with Venger, and JOL.

They're only making a big thing out of the game because it gives them a bit of a profile to have any sort of association with us. Always desperately rubbing up against us to see if any glitter sticks to their shabby robes.

I may be coming around to the thought that the O'Neill steam train is starting to slow down and they are finiding their level again.

Nice defeat at the weekend should help reinforce that idea.

HOLY SHIT!  :jesuswept:

Sunday's Derby: One for the Ages

All too often we slap the legend label on people and things just passing through our club.

Players, games, goals and managers, who flatter to deceive and then are forgotten, except for the odd insult or 'did you know/can you remember' posting on the message board.

Sunday was different. It hasn't even subsided but it could already be part of Sunderland folklore.

From Catts pre-match tunnel "chat" with their so-called hard man, to that first tackle, to McClean's face-off with Rico running to the rescue, to Campbell's touchline warm up antics through to Sess's sending off, Poncey Pardew's mincing maurading into MON's face, to Mig's save, the despair of the equaliser and, finally, back to the man who began it all - somehow managing to be red-carded after the bloody game had finished.

You couldn't make this shit up.

It has the feel, taste and smell of SAFC history. One of those "I was there" games to tell the grandkids about. And that is much, much more important than a dropped couple of points.

Because, if we weren't a team going into that game, then we sure as hell were one coming out of it.

Football these days seems to revolve around finances, agents, Sky TV and a general lack of loyalty. Sunday was the perfect antidote.

From Short in the stands, to MON on the touchline, through to our captain Catts - the footballing equivalent of Russell Crowe's Gladiator - this was, in the best sense of the words, Us against Them.

And make no mistake, Us won.

We have staked out our territory - the last gasp goal of theirs irrelevant. This is much-needed mouthwash to the 5-1 defeat. It isn't about numbers, isn't even about results. It is about pride and when Catts launched himself into a tackle he had no chance of making after only 40 seconds it was the perfect thing to do.

Because we needed to be counted. What would have been stupid in a game a week before was perfect for that moment.

So if MON didn't know, Short didn't know, Sess didn't know - know what we all do know. Well, they know it now.

The league position this season doesn't really matter now. We have other, fatter fish to fry. Starting, but not ending, at Goodison.

But we are top dogs and they can feel it in their bones and sweaty bellies.

And these dogs have the bit well and truly between their teeth.
