From a business (Ashley) point of view if they have named a price that we find acceptable, he may as well play hard ball hoping to knock of half a million or whatever and if not meet their demands nearer the window closing. Especially as the player has made it so clear he wants to come.

I suppose Mike probably doesn't want to look like he's been dictated too. Maybe in his mind he is thinking if he folds on this deal, that future negotiations may go this way. I agree with the principle of this but given that this guy will improve our team significantly I want us to fold if it is true that the want an extra £1million.

It's getting silly now. Any small financial saving made by letting this drag are negated by the benefits of a full pre-season. Whether its 5 or 6 million, we'll have robbed them either way.

Strangely I agree with Ashley on not giving in to the Lille prez's posturing

I'd rather have spent that £1m and have him integrated during pre-season. Worked wonders for Cabaye, etc.

(that is, obviously, assuming that rumour is true)

Aye it would have been money well spent imo. Not in favour of doing it for every player, don't like being held to ransom or being shafted but for the extra million I'd have just paid it and brought him in on this occasion. The upgrade at RB justifies it imo.

Each to their own though. I can also understand why the club are digging their heels in but I'd pay it.

If we lose out on Debuchy for the sake of £1 million

For one thing, the reaction on here would be something to behold (admittedly, my reaction could very well be amongst the more "wild"/"OTT" ones). Still, there's 17 days for us to do something.

If Lille have shifted the goalposts by demanding more money after agreeing transger fee we should just pull out of the deal.  There is always a better player waiting on the background

It would fit in with Debuchy's comments. I think he is worth that money but if they are playing the twat I wouldn't want us to pander to them. If they have already moved the goalposts who is to say they won't do it again?

The club are taking the right approach, cave in and you start paying £15m for Fletcher.

You know full well it isn't the same lol, we would be "caving in " to sign a international RB for 6m hardly being ripped off tbh and it's still a great deal.

I'm still confident that at some point between now and when the window closes that either Lille will accept what we give them or we give them a improved offer which they will accept.

None the less going from 5m to 6m is hardly "caving in".

Us being frugal isn't a terrible way to go in the financial climate of the game, and Pardew all but confirmed that at the talk-in last night. But it'd be absolutely fucking scandalous if we missed out on this player over the sake of £1m, regardless of the success we've had with this policy so far. You've got to find a medium somewhere; we can't forget that Cabaye and Ben Arfa were two of the bargains of the century at less than £5m each. You can throw Ba in with that, too. Surely we can afford to relinquish our stubbornness just a bit.

He's a fantastic player who would improve us immeasurably, and he wants to come here. There should be no excuses if we miss out on him.

I don't think it's about being frugal as we agreed a price for him. If his value's gone up since then they have the option to sell elsewhere, but not many clubs want to pay £6m for a 27 yr old full back with no resale value otherwise he'd have been signed already.

Agree with this.

The longer this goes on, the less interested I am in seeing him here. It might be a good idea to see how young Tavernier goes in the position before shelling out shitloads on a 27 year old.
