Shak
The game changed because we ran out of legs. Anita did ok but made some very sloppy passes which could have been punished. After 75 mins we were dead on our feet and De Jong longs weeks away from fitness I'd agree with that. Think Vurn is pivotal to the way we played today though, dropping between the CB's to start the play. A role where if you lose the ball it's very, very noticeable as you're exposed. Can you imagine Tiote in that role? Would be absolute suicide.
mozy
My shite stream ony started working after about 40 mins, but Anita seemed to have had an excellent game up until his injury. Light years better than Tiote anyway.

They both did ok but they take up 2 places in a side where 1 player should do. Wignaldum looks a star and De Jong looks a bit surplus to requirements. We need a left back and Obertan can't continue. First half we were dreadful down the left but late on their fitness and was helpful
LoveItIfWeBeatU
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/vurnon-anita-injury-how-long-9821622 Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren says that Vurnon Anita’s injury may not have been as bad as first feared. The Holland midfielder was carried off in the second half after an awkward fall during the 2-2 draw with Southampton – and it looked like a bad injury. He was replaced by Cheick Tiote with the Ivory Coast international making his first appearance since January. Asked about the extent of Anita’s injury, the Toon chief said after the game: “Vurnon is ok and he’s walking around normally. We will assess it this week.” Anita has been a surprise mainstay of Newcastle’s midfield during pre-season and got the nod over Tiote on Sunday – and he will be desperate not to lose his place after a stop-start spell at St James’ Park. United’s next game is at Swansea City on Saturday. Was it Anita who did a few wayward passes which went straight to the opposition? Apart from that (if it was him) he played well. The College Dropout
IMO the poor last 15-20 minutes had more to do with De Jong & Tiote being extremely rusty and the wrong players for the situation. Also Wijnaldum's legs fell off
Kanj
Love seeing Anita dropping in between the CBs to get some attacks moved and started. Not something I normally would like, but I liked the different approach.

AY
But it means our fullbacks can push further up straightaway. Seen it used by many teams that try to play on the deck. Sensible way, but really wouldn't work with Tiote.

themanupstairs
Love seeing Anita dropping in between the CBs to get some attacks moved and started. Not something I normally would like, but I liked the different approach. This was his exact role at Ajax before we signed him, and when he didn't play LB. He seems really comfortable doing it and generally uses the ball quite well. Passing was a bit wayward on occasion today but it's nice to see we're doing something apart from the willo-hoof. AyeDubbleYoo
Loved watching him today, exactly what I've been waiting to see him do. Show for the ball, get the team moving, make us look like a proper football team.
NUFC_Chris
He played well, we did seem to lose shape when he went off. My only real issue with him is his height, which can be a real problem when teams exploit it. He just won't win many high balls in the middle of the park; which Southampton did highlight a number of times today.

I don't think it's that big an issue to be losing aerial tussles in midfield if we defend properly. He's actually got a decent leap on him anyway so he can at least challenge in that area and that's usually enough to stop teams taking advantage. Kanj
Anita Wijndalum Sissoko de Jong Aarons Cisse/Mitrovic Yup, but I'm really thinking Perez is better suited for a style of play. Although I'm a massive fan of De Jong, mind you. I think he's an absolutely deadly footballer when on form -- I just think Perez's silky smooth style, technical ability and goal threat (with far better pace than Siem) is what we need in that role. sturla
Why move Wijndalum further back, to a accommodate De Jong or because he would be better there?

I think we need a better footballer than one of Colback/Anita in central midfield and also we have a lot of competition for that attacking midfield role

Gallowgate Toon
I'd be very interested to see Cabella as a 10 behind the striker. Easy to forget after last season but the lad was an absolute class act for Montpellier when played there. He created a boatload of chances (think he was the highest in Ligue 1) and got 14 goals. Of course, it's not the best league, but it's just as impressive as Wijnaldum's individual season for PSV last year, IMO. Don't think it'd work that well if Cisse's the one leading the line, due to a lack of athleticism, but if Mitrovic proves to be a good player in this league then they could be a duo that dovetail quite well.
