When Cabaye left we lost our link between midfield and attack, an this has forced LDJ to drop too deep. One (not the only one) of the reasons he's not getting in to goal scoring positions often enough.

It could be that or it could be he just doesn't get in the right positions. That could be why Borussia Mönchengladbach were happy to loan him out with a view to selling him. I bet Borussia Mönchengladbach are gutted that Luuk de Jong hasn't had much of an impact at Newcastle so far.

Cisse got into about 5 goal scoring positions against Crystal Palace.

Not concerned about De Jong lack of goals just yet. It took Bony an age to start looking decent at Swansea, and like Bony, I reckon there is a pretty good striker in there somewhere.

He got 6 in his first 10 games, including 2 on his debut.

Didn't he?

I think there's a class player in there that needs to be re-found and his best skills are not utilized - hope that happens sooner than later.

Quite honestly, if I was sure we'd go and sign a few good strikers to replace the outgoings I'd be more than happy with that.

No idea. :D

Just though he looked pretty poor, and for a time seemed to struggle to convert decent chances everytime I watched him.

Neil Cameron: It's time for Luuk de Jong to show he is a player

Mar 25, 2014 15:00

Neil Cameron believes Luuk de Jong can be a success at Newcastle United – but knows that the Dutchman must start to show his worth on Tyneside

It’s called the Imperial March. Or Darth Vader’s Theme if you are a true Star Wars geek.

Whoever first came up with the idea of this being Luuk de Jong’s song is something of a genius.

If you don’t know the composition by that king of the film scores, John Williams, then it goes a bit like this.

Luuk, Luuk de Jong, Luuk de Jong, Luuk de Jong. And so forth.

The first few notes can put the fear of death into anyone of a certain age for whom Darth Vader was the scariest man alive.

Alas, thus far, Newcastle United’s Dutch striker has failed to put the fear of death into any Premier League defence.

And it’s high time he did just that.

Also, the fans haven’t had a chance sing this song, or any other, for the player the club had scouted for over a year before eventually taking him on loan in January from Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The Germans forked out a little under £13m in the summer of 2012 after his goalscoring form at FC Twente had alerted many of European football’s biggest clubs to his talent.

So it’s not as if De Jong doesn’t have any pedigree. It’s just that he’s not done much so far and you feel he really needs to score a goal or three over these final matches.

He says he wants to stay at Newcastle, and you would imagine his parent club would not be difficult to deal with.

However, what will be difficult is Alan Pardew persuading Mike Ashley to write out a cheque for a player who didn’t make much of an impression over four months.

Now for the record, I believe the 23-year-old has something about him even if he has been unable to show that in a black-and-white shirt.

But that’s seven games, no goals and he’s managed only one full game so far.

As one wag said: “He’s the most important striker since Pele turned 50.”

Saturday’s win over Crystal Palace was no classic, even if the end was great run. Everyone did well enough, some more than others. Everyone that is apart from De Jong, who ran himself into the ground with little to show for it.

In his defence, he has been asked to play behind Papiss Cisse, a role that doesn’t seem to suit him. Against Palace, he won third of his headers and from 33 touches had two forgettable shots on goal.

His one big opportunity came when a Cisse shot was pushed into the air by Julian Speroni. De Jong got there first, but he seemed to time his jump all wrong and his header from six yards never troubled the goal.

It wasn’t a sitter, far from it, but you would have expected him to at least make the goalkeeper work.

The stark facts are De Jong has no goals and no assists for the whole season, including his time in Germany. He made 13 appearances for Moenchengladbach, albeit all as a substitute.

He arrived at Newcastle short of game-time and it has shown. There are legitimate reasons why it hasn’t quite happened yet, but after tonight there are only seven games left for him to do something.

Papiss Cisse will surely be given his chance, while Loic Remy will hopefully be back next weekend and he’ll obviously go straight back into the XI. It would be handy for De Jong if he scored this evening against Everton.

United have failed to score in five of their last eight league games, while having scored one or less goals in 18 of their 30 matches. He was signed to improve these statistics.

De Jong is apparently a good lad with an exemplary attitude. But that’s not enough when it’s not happening on the park. And he will know that.

He's got it all to do in the remaining games to try and earn a deal here. He isn't worth £8m right now. Low on confidence maybe, but I don't think we're a good fit to get that confidence back.

Depending on his current contract length I would try and get him on a season long loan in the summer. Half a season is no time to judge a player, just bump the Debuchy thread from last summer to see how their attributes (or apparent lack of) are highlighted to ridiculous lengths.

Good point. But Debuchy was more proven as a "good" player. De Jong could be Altidore status.
