Jack Flash
Cabaye is, by a fair margin, the player who plays the most on average per game other than Krul http://www.andyhanselman.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Hands-over-ears-3.jpg
Guest malandro
What constitutes a long pass, anything not played on the deck? There are good passes and bad passes. Meaningful passes and pointless passes. How far the ball travels is probably the least important attribute of any pass. Anyone with eyes can see we play a lot of percentage punts, don't need stats. Parky
Shameful really. There have been games where we've mixed it up more, but under pressure certain players just launch it.

Parky
Shameful really. There have been games where we've mixed it up more, but under pressure certain players just launch it. Teams have caught onto that imo by the way they press us this season. I think so too. After last year, they've all been watching the tapes and so on.. I know they're playing on instruction, but it's not even done with any discipline or care most of the time. There seems to be a fear of the midfield moving up and increasing the posession phase by one or two rotations and letting players interchange or find space. I realise there are times when a long ball is dangerous but we don't really play it like that. It's more into general areas.
Colos Short and Curlies
The main problem with us playing long ball, is that we are rubbish at it. No target man and no players buzzing around to pick up the pieces. Coupled with the number of times that opposition strikers pick up the second ball against us, the question needs to be asked if all of our players play within a 10 yard radius of the centre circle? Also an interesting bit in F365 today - we've not scored from a set piece this season, only had 4 shots from within the 6 yard box and have only socred onece from our last 270 corners! Wullie
Man United have scored from eight set pieces this season, and they're not a tall team. Our coaching in that area must be atrocious, I think we're the only team not to have scored from one.
AyeDubbleYoo
Long ball is a result of our shite defenders taking the easy way out, and a midfield that's not mobile enough to provide them with options. Problem is, the only way to beat a team that's pressing you is to keep the ball off them as long as you can. If you don't keep the ball, they don't tire and they can press you again next time. Wullie
How does that explain Cabaye being the main culprit?

When i watch them they seem to attack the ball really well in comparison our players seem frightened of it

Spider Jerusalem
Also an interesting bit in F365 today - we've not scored from a set piece this season, only had 4 shots from within the 6 yard box and have only socred onece from our last 270 corners! Wonder how many of those corners have hit the first defender as well. Isn't it an average of around 1 goal per 90 corners for an average team? Can't remember the exact stats, but the conclusion was that corners were almost no goal threat at all. Also, they intuitively seem like they're really dangerous, so the disappointment of not scoring is even worse.

Would that of included goals that come from second and third phases of play after a corner, I don't think we're even using them effectively as a means to build pressure on the opposition these days. Guest
Updated after last week and this week's results. We've actually extended the gap over Everton by 2 points due to them dropping 3 points last week to Fulham and only holding their point against Norwich, and us dropping our draw against Swansea. Lose tomorrow though and "the pack" are within reach. GuyP
Its funny that Everton are -3, puts in to perspective their start this year (though i think they are a great side this year)...also had no idea that Norwich were as good as last year let alone a point better off.
