Inside Newcastle United’s Benton training base, the calm assurance of Alan Pardew spoke volumes. A pivotal week which could have visited trouble on Newcastle United has been navigated with calm assurance and a more-than-decent return of two draws, a win and the subsequent shelving of a whole host of awkward queries. United – as Steven Taylor bullishly asserted – can say they are preparing for Manchester United by claiming they “fear no one” and eyebrows will not be arched. Indeed, the team have given themselves a platform to attack tomorrow’s Capital One Cup tie at Old Trafford without having to chase the victory. Pardew takes up the theme with relish: “Both myself and Alex will take a look at it and see which players need games and have that winning mentality. “We have a slight advantage in that we have been able to blood so many players in the Europa League so I can send a strong side there. With respect to this competition we have to try and win it. “We will prioritise competitions somewhere down the line, we don’t know how our league campaign is going to go and we don’t know how our cup campaigns are going to go. “We need to get a feel for it and see whether we are in the latter stages of any cups. “We have a tough game for us at Old Trafford – they’re going to look to dictate the pace and win the game, they always do. “They have a fantastic squad, they’re the greatest club in the world, but playing them gives everybody a lift. “We’re getting to the stage where there is a mentality in the group where we could win a competition now. “We have to try and win every game and see where our goals are at Christmas time. “Then we can really start to focus on what we want to achieve this season.” Among the players, there is a conviction that they are building momentum. Younger squad members – players like Gael Bigirimana, Haris Vuckic and James Tavernier – are beginning to feel part of it and Taylor is convinced they are beginning to prove themselves. He said: “After the performance against Norwich we are ready for Manchester United. “The confidence is there. We don’t fear anybody. We just have to make sure we do what we were doing against the top teams last year. “We have young players playing in the Europa League whot are saying they want to keep playing and when they get their chance they are showing they can play for this club. Everyone is keeping people flying.” Team spirit is the ephemeral factor which seems to be firing Newcastle and Taylor recounts an anecdote about Sunday’s penalty incident which speaks volumes. The team took a decision to give Cisse the opportunity to take the kick in a move which was supported by Hatem Ben Arfa, once the ultimate maverick. On Sunday he supported a decision which denied him a goal. Taylor added: “Even Demba was saying to Hatem, Hatem was happy to help, we just wanted to get Papiss scoring again. “For us we don’t regret that and if the chance came along again then the players would probably want the same thing. “At half-time we all came in and hugged each other. We are all united and that incident showed.” Meanwhile, Pardew offered no comment on news of Nile Ranger’s latest arrest. Reinforces the impression I've been getting that Ba sees his situation as one of competition with Cisse, rather than the two of them looking for ways to understand each other and play together more effectively. This will be Taylor's first senior game at the ground, with the only previous fixture he's handled involving the Red Devils their 5-0 stroll at Molineux back in March.
