How highly do you rate... Robert Pires?

Had a fantastic attitude and was one of the best players with a dead ball that I've ever seen. His crossing was excellent and he was a pretty decent finisher. His stamina often goes unnoticed as well. He was probably the fittest player in our treble winning side.

I liked him and I'll miss him. That's Beckham, Scholes, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt gone from the class of '92. Only Phil Neville and of course Giggs left.

He basically won you that Champions League final because he was still going full pelt in the last 10 minutes like the game had only just kicked off. He carried the team over the line.

Credit the guy, he worked very hard at his game and showed a lot of determination in getting to the top. But the praise and attention that he got always irritated me because there were some significant limitations to his game. Particularly in the second part of his England career, I felt he was holding the team back.

One of my favourite players of all time. Probably the best right foot I've ever seen in the game (at crosses, set pieces - not dribbling that is).

Just a few weeks back I watched his performance against Greece for England again - just heroic that day. Carried the team all 90+ minutes.

Also, as allready mentionend, he deserved massive credit for the 1999 final. Special thanks for that as that still sits so, so deep in the hearts of the 'real' Bayern supporters.

“He can’t kick with his left foot, he can’t head, he can’t tackle, and he doesn’t score many goals. Apart from that, he’s all right” - George Best

And that, gentlemen, is that. Far be it from me to disagree with a proper legend. I cannot emphasize enough how over rated Beckham was/is, and I say that because I've seen far, far better English players in my lifetime. Gazza, Waddle, Hoddle were all flair players as Becks supposedly was and all are far superior ,in my opinion to him. You cannot fault Beckham's attitude, professionalism and work rate, or indeed his right foot from a set piece , but do those attributes really make a footballer who has had the press he has ?

In my honest, no it doesn't.

Done well, but as thick as two short planks.

You've just described 95% of professional footballers there

And why would anyone call Beckham a flair player? That's not his style at all. I wouldn't have called Robert a flair player, simply a direct and effective one, which is what Beckham was.

His goalscoring ratio was 1 in 5, not bad for a midfielder really.

He took every free kick around the penalty area for years though.

Freekicks are hardly guaranteed goals tbf to him.

Aye, he took them and scored them all because he was mint at them.

Using someone's strength to excuse their success seems backwards.

In a way he was classic 'Golden generation' of England. Hyped to within in an inch of his life and repeatedly did little of note in international tournaments for his country.

similarly stephen hawking is a sharp enough fella, but can't curl a free-kick for shite.

He definitely did more than most. Even if it was just the big moments.

I'm a Beckham fan boy. Always have been.

He has all the attributes I rate in a footballer. I'm not one for crazy dribbling and 75 goals a season. That stuff is great, Messi is obviously brilliant, but Beckham was just such a top quality pro. Stamina, Workrate, Passing, Ball Retention, Delivery, Finishing. Outstanding at all. Yeah so he didn't have blistering pace or a trick, as Waddle picked out. But he didn't need them. All he needed was a matter of inches. Just a half step around the defender and he would drop the ball exactly where it needed to be. That sort of thing is priceless. It's the sort of thing we laud Cabaye for. The guy was class and that is all that matters to me. Sadly, his fame, fortune and ridiculous good looks have made it easy to hate David Beckham and detract from the fact he was one of the best players of the last two decades.

And as for George Best's opinion. I couldn't give a fuck. He was a world class player but a first class wanker. If he had more about him as a man he could have had everything Beckham had rather than drinking himself into an early grave with only the people who wanted another drink anywhere near him.

I know which one I would want my kids to grow up wanting to emulate.

As an aside, a mate of mine told me this story about Beckham. You can decide for yourselves how credible it is.

This mate got into a conversation with someone who worked in computer games. His company had cut a deal with Beckham's agents to feature him in a football game, and the agents then sent him details of the various hairstyles that Beckham was due to sport over the next couple of years or so. They wanted Beckham's image to be periodically updated accordingly on the game.

So basically, Beckham's various changes in hairstyle were all being planned as a sequence months in advance, with his agents fully involved.

Exactly how I feel.

We are talking about a creative player and two of the things Best criticises him for are his tackling and heading ??? Even if he wasn't exactly Maldini in the tackle he definitely worked hard anyway. As commented on his goal to game ratio isn't remotely bad either.

Maybe Best was a little jealous another Man Utd player was being talked about so highly :dontknow:

Tbf to Best, when Ronaldo was on the scene he said something along the lines of 'usually when a player is compared to me it's a compliment to them, but this time it's a compliment to me.'

Beckham's fame made it easy for him to be shot down. If he had the fame level of Scholes I think you'd find much more rounded opinions from everyone.

During 1998 - 2002/3, he was one of the best right sided midfielders, that's for sure. George Best even took his words back. He said, and I am paraphrasing this because I don't remember it word for word, that what's the point of beating players, when you can get the ball to beat players for you. The fact that Becks could bend the ball past players means he eliminated a bunch of players before getting it to Yorke's, Cole's, or Ruud's head/foot.

He didn't need to beat his man to get the same job done. Thats pretty phenomenal if you had to sit back to think about it.

People can say what they want about his personal life, who cares. Always seems to me like a nice enough man to me. People these days put too much effort into hating complete strangers. He's had a great career and good luck to him.
