Complete waste of Ben Arfa. Cabaye can do it but he's never going to be brilliant at it.

Agree... Ben Arfa is best on the right cutting in... Marveaux possibly a better number 10 than Cabaye...

To try Ben Arfa as a number 10 would be good.

But Ben Arfa is more a right forward (not milfielder) so Cabaye number 10 and Ben Arfa right forward and Marveaux left forward (?).

Aye although there isn't really enough between Cabaye and Marveaux in that role for Pardew to prefer Marveaux due to Cabaye offering much more defensively.

Should be Anita-Cabaye-Marv when fit but Pardew needs defensive security.

my worry would be that the "withdrawn striker" would mean a rigid 4-4-1-1

we have the capability for so much movement but it relies heavily on cabaye and ben arfa (with the squad we have at least one of them has to play for it to work). i'd be looking at....

                krul

back 4 with santon and debuchy pushing on

                      tiote

            flexible 4

            cisse

I'd be amazed if we signed three more players this window like

I think we'll get a striker and about a 50/50 we get a CB.

I think there's about a 50% chance of us getting a striker and a about a 25%  chance of us getting a CB.

Should make this a guessing competition: I'll take 98% on the striker and 2% on the centre-half...

Speaking to Pardew put him off apparently.

How embarrassing, but so not surprising if true.

Pardew probably hardly has any real idea who he is!

God we need a new manager ...

Cabaye and Ben Arfa in a withdrawn role behind Shola when Cisse is unavailable.

This is it. Our first XI would still be very good without replacing Ba. In theory Cisse up top, with HBA and Marveaux either side, with Cabaye, Tiote and Anita in the middle. Problem is, if anything happens to Cisse we're fucked.

Thank fuck Ivory Coast managed to beat Senegal to a place in the ACoN this year. Playing Nile Ranger as lone forward with Perch behind him in midfield creating chances would really have meant suicide watch in Newcastle. Starting with Pardew.

Watch us spend the next few weeks trying to convince him and fail and end up with nobody

...and then sign him in the summer when his values has decreased even more.

On a serious note, and not to fuel Dave's ridiculous accusation of Scandinavian panic, but the news coming out today has started to worry me a bit. We simply cannot afford another window where we claim to be doing this and that but eventually fail. Without another striker (and probably a CB), we are in serious, serious trouble.

I just hope for Pardew's sake if we don't "get someone over the line" he doesn't come out with any patronising comments to the fans like he did last summer. "You know january is a hard month to sign players"......problem for him is he knows the drill, he knows the rules with MA/DL abd ultimately he's the one who faces the media and the questions because those two are never going to answer to anyone. Just look at his press conference when he arrived ffs, nobody else there  How spineless was that of DL the "chief executive"

Pardew has been quite outspoken in the necessity for new players and I get the impression with his comments so far that he is not prepared to protect the board this time round.  Probably a case of passing the buck if the team continues to fail.

He definitely looks exasperated that's for sure. I think the full gravity of the situation has hit home, that we're really on the edge of something potentially very nasty if injuries, team form and transfers don't start to improve. The playing side of things being down to him.
