The two up front might work purely in terms of having two out and out goalscorers instead of one, but I can't see why a partnership would work really. By all accounts they take the same role; it was bad enough when Ba was here and he's a much more rounded striker than either Bent or Cisse.

We'd need to generally create more, particularly from the flanks, which would become a worry in itself.

How did Bent get on with Defoe, out of interest? Anyone remember, or have any stats on how the partnership went? I vaguely remember stories about them being incompatible together, but can't be sure.

Deuce?

Yep, if the idea is to sign him to play with Cisse in a 4-4-2 then it's wrong on every level. No real sign that that's the case yet though.

Part of the reason this signing seems unlikely is that Bent would surely want almost guaranteed starting football wherever he ends up next. Could be his last major move.

Would prefer a player I've barely seen from overseas who hasn't played for the mackums though obviously.

Why? Pardew's already far enough out of his comfort zone IMO.

I seem to remember Bent being on the bench a lot and Spurs favouring Keane and Defoe initially and then Keane and Berbatov.

At least that is how my father tells it. ( Spurs fan)

Just like most people prefer the mystery box. Unknown quantities are always potentially more exciting than multi clubbed English players.

(the 'barely seen' was supposed to hint at that line being a bit tongue in cheek tbf)

Sounds to me like Bent is quite partial to the odd benching.

Cisse scored 8 goals in 35 PL appearances. (One simply bounced off his arse and went in)

I can see every reason why Bent should be looked at as a potential NUFC player. Who thinks he wouldn't match or even better 8 in 35 appearances?

Cisse might get his head down and realise putting it in the net and not diddlywhacked into nowhere is what will keep him in the team. Shall I mention the offside rules?? No. Thought not. Cisse played last season like he was guarantee'd his place (he was!). Bent will set the cat amongst the pigeon(s)

A good signing at the right price. Need one more to compliment either Cisse or Bent though.

I remember Comolli bought Bent in over Jol's head, when Jol was crying out for a DM. The DOF at work :lol;

Bent's one of those, in the right place at the right time type of strikers imo. Not a bad trait to have.

Buying two seems a little unrealistic IMO.

Is there actually any reliable evidence of a bid being in the works? It would be such a counterintuitive transfer.

He's definitely leaving so I assume it's now up to us if we want him as he's unlikely to get a better offer.

:sadnod: i'd be all for this if we bought Bent to compete with Cisse for the central striking spot and bought another forward to play wide who can compliment them.

I can't see that happening however.

I think the question was more about whether there's any evidence we actually want him, as it would be contrary to most other signings we've made.

Bent isn't a bad striker despite all the negativity here, but he's too similar to Cisse, that's the problem. Especially the way Pardew teams play.

Yep, he's not a bad player he's just unlikely to come as backup and not what we need as a starter. If he's happy to compete with Cisse for one slot then fair enough.
