The difference between the Swansea & Southampton games is huge. We played poorly down there, we played decent and had chances up here, while restricting them to one clear cut chance and a 30-yarder which can happen in a game.

They also hit the woodwork unless that's the chance you're on about, according to the BBC they had 60% possession.  If they have 60% possession that's 60% of the game that we could do nothing with the ball.

Their game is more patient, more passing along the back, and waiting for an opening. We like to try and hit on the break and get the ball forward quicker. You could say them passing the ball about in areas which didn't hurt (they had about 65% possession first-half when we were on top) means we're doing our job and limiting their attacks and being more canny with the possession we have.

I've criticised Pardew a lot because for large parts of the last 18 months he's been s*** but he couldn't have done much more today. We created the best chances, missed some sitters and even in the second half I thought we look more likely to grab a second than concede.

It is amusing to see loads of people whinge about Pardew's perceived negativity and they only scored because our full back and centre back were f***ing about on the edge of their final third when they broke

We only looked more likely to grab a second once they'd equalised. First fifteen minutes of the second half were awful and that's what cost us. We sat extremely deep and gave them the initiative when we really didn't need to. I thought Southampton were rotten in the first half.

They scored when we were pressing man. They caught us on the break. The goal wasn't a result of pressure that had been building the entire half, it was Santon trying a chip from 30 yards out when nee f***er was behind him to clear up his mess.

Purely because it was a set piece, we werent pressing them whatsoever 2nd half until they scored. We were taking pressure.

Were we taking pressure because Pardew's s*** or Southampton are actually a pretty good side who excel at retaining and recycling possession, particularly when they need a goal?

Do some of our supporters genuinely expect us to sit on the front foot for 90 minutes? Yes, we often perform poorly after HT but this isn't Norwich. Pardew really can't take much if any flack for today.

As for the negative stuff, we were actively looking for a second when we conceded the equaliser. Actually if we were a bit more negative and kept more men back we'd probably not have drew today.

Understand you trying to give them credit. There was clearly a change though, our formation changed to Shola up top & we rarely broke forwards to support for knock downs from long balls as we had first half. Gouffran for example hogged the right wing rather than joining & we sat back more behind the half way line.

It was a polar shift from the side playing quick one touch football breaking through southampton with ease before half time.

Pardew does it because hes making us very hard to score against & relying on counter attacks to finish the game, it is a tactic he uses which works against the bigger sides really. The issue is how needlessly vulnerable it leaves you to incidents like today when you were clearly on top of the game.

I flicked on to Football Focus (or some shite like that) really briefly this morning, and Pardew was on.

I saw at most 45 seconds of it, but from what I saw, he was basically saying "Not only are we doing very well, but look, that Southampton side is practically mine, too".

Wtf? I don't understand that.  Just sayin that hoof ball = fuck all possession. No agenda.

 He was quoting Pardew on MOTD.

Not sure I understood your post anyway, I'd have thought possession stats were in fact based on time held on to the ball (not including the time it takes to take free kicks, throw ins, etc).  Wouldn't make much sense if it's simply a count of passes made.

Oh, sorry... I don't get to see MOTD in the US.

Well do you think somebody ITK can confirm it, either way? Number of passes vs. time on the ball = tv possession % stat?

maybe this is just a stupid football question...

"Possession" represents that percentage of time in possession of the ball. Passes are represented by the "passes" stat.

The thing that baffled me was bringing Cisse on and then repeatedly hoofing it towards him even though it was obvious he wasn't going to win a header

As if this hasn't been plan A for the majority of the past 2 years xD

And I watched the whole game today in real time on NBCsn terrestrial TV... &  I thought it was pretty even, first half, they maybe even shaded it second half.

maybe you guys are quoting stats from another channel, but surely somebody isn't standing there with a stopwatch.

just didn't seem like they had 50% more possession (time) than us, first half (60:40), nowhere near.

Ok, so somebody in the press box just calls the office with a guesswork number... Yay for Arlo White and Graeme le Sauxthampton (lucky us).
