It wasn't bad at all, it was soft as shite and completely pathetic. You cannot purposefully play the man instead of the ball though, you have to make an attempt to win the ball when making a challenge otherwise it's a yellow. The same with touching a players' face, regardless of how hard you hit if you raise your hands to a players face you're off.

right, point is though that (unless something has changed) refs take that into account when issuing a second yellow...he kicked the back of cabayes legs when they were both stood next to each other, it's barely a first yellow nevermind  second

agree with the "fuck them" thing mind, what goes around etc....let's just not ignore how soft it was and how much it saved our skin

Should just agree to disagree. I think it was worthy of a second yellow purely because he told Cabaye that he was going to do him in front of the ref and then proceeded to foul him. It was thick as fuck.

well, i didn't know this happened...however did that class as "doing him"?

if so i was playing in the wrong sunday league

No, but it obviously would have put the thought into the ref's mind when he then proceeded to foul Cabaye from behind. Soft but really thick from Whelan. I'd have been foaming if one of our players did it.

(Not) surprised MOTD didn't show Whelan's gesture to Cabaye post first yellow given it was pretty important to the narrative of what was going to happen. Same with the Cisse pen.

Having their goal back, the defending was even worse than I remember. Divvent let an obvious right footer who just scored screamer cut in unchallenged to fire off a shot FFS.

He kicked out after motioning he was going to 'do him' minutes earlier. It was as blatant a yellow as you'll ever see. The first one was soft.

what so saying something now counts in an innocuous foul?  'cause that's what it was like, it was f*** all

There was no attempt to play the ball. Thick as f*** on a yellow card.

wasn't worthy of a second yellow, sorry like it just wasn't

He was making no attempt to play the ball and I heard the contact his boot made on Cabaye's shinpad from 40 yards away, the referee will have heard it as well. Impossible for the ref to do anything except show a yellow card imo.

The fact that there was no protest at all from the player sums it up, he kicked out at him deliberately in an act of 'revenge'. The only card up for debate would be the first yellow, but if I was a Stoke fan I'd be more angry at the player for being thick enough to get sent of after that.

And he said quite vocally he was going to "do" Cabaye. It looks harsh because the red had to come out but it's a yellow every time.

A statement on the FA website read: "Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has been charged by The FA following his side's game at Newcastle United yesterday [Thursday 26 December].

"It is alleged that his behaviour in or around the 40th minute of the fixture amounted to improper conduct."

Quite right too. How managers can expect their players to behave with discipline when they themselves act like brats, I'll never know.

You're right, those at the game or watching it all in real time will understand that Whelan talked himself into a red card, I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing when Hughes patted him on the back on his way off, it was one of the most idiotic things I've seen on a football pitch.

That's what got him sent off. He fact that he needlessly kicked Cabaye so soon after the 1st yellow and with the ref so close to the 2nd incident left the ref with no option but to show a 2nd yellow.

Hughes is a shit cunt and his players are too.

Whelan's first yellow: soft foul but three different offences so a good decision, Cabaye perhaps lucky to escape Scott free

Whelan's second yellow: sheer aggression with no attempt to play ball, good decision

Hughes's red card: acting like a prick, acknowledged in interview, good decision

Wilson's red card: clear goalscoring opportunity, good decision

Williamson's handball: poor decision, wouldn't have effected result

Ben Arfa's assist: poor decision, ball went out, wouldn't have effected result

Second penalty appeal/award: Hatem clearly hacked down, good decision

Third penalty appeal/dismissal: contentious one, clear push on Cabaye, fair enough decision

Fourth penalty appeal/dismissal: rough challenge but probably got enough of the ball, fair enough decision

I cant stand Hughes as nothing is ever his or his teams fault but all he did was kick the ball back on the pitch. That really was all he did as shown on Soccer Extra this morning. His sending off was a joke and ridiculous and shows just how precious 4th officials can be.

I feel so wrong sticking up for him.

They came back to it after the break and Kamara apologised as he didn't realise.
