Robbo
Contender for the worst article I've ever seen, bold bits in particular: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-uniteds-vice-life-president-urges-7788741?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter The famous BBC vidiprinter on Saturday, 13 September 2008, spluttered out: Newcastle United 1, Hull City 2. To the rest of English football it may have deemed as a bit of coupon buster. For Newcastle United it was the start of an unhealthy decline that resulted in a season of fan unrest, political implosion and ultimately the surrender of the Premier League status the club had proudly held for the previous 15 years. Already similarities are being drawn up between then and now as Hull prepare for the visit to Tyneside. That day against the Tigers fans protested about the ownership of the club, they didn’t do so at the start of the game, they backed the team from the start but after the Magpies trailed to a 34th minute goal from Marlon King feelings naturally started to ooze out around the stadium. The reason then was that Kevin Keegan had walked out on the club after they’d asked him to pose for the traditional photograph with new signings Xisco and Nacho Gonzalez, two players he didn’t believe were good enough to represent the city or the fans. Keegan was proved right as both players flopped. Fast forward to 2014 and has life at Newcastle changed that much? Alan Pardew is the man in the dugout, he stated to his board he needed a centre-forward this summer and has been keen to sign a new defender for some time, London sources say he has been eager to bring West Ham’s James Tomkins in to bolster his back four. Pardew can’t argue that he hasn’t been backed with seven new signings available to him at first team level this summer but opting against filling those key positions are already proving costly. Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley Pardew won’t resign, Mike Ashley is reluctant to sack him with a reported £5million compensation package to cough up if he does. Some fans feel Pardew has had long enough to make the team his own others can see that Ashley hasn’t backed him in the transfer window this summer with no proven striker or senior defender. Nevertheless it could be Pardew that feels the heat - or at least if the anonymous Sackpardew.com group get their way. Ashley was the target of fans anger back in 2008 and it resulted in him releasing a statement from him which read: “I have the interests of Newcastle United at heart. “I have listened to you. “You want me out. “That is what I am now trying to do but it won’t happen overnight and it may not happen at all if a buyer does not come in. “You don’t need to demonstrate against me again because I have got the message.” The Magpies did try to persuade Keegan to come back but he refused and the exit of the manager meant few wanted to touch the Toon job. I understand that Terry Venables turned it down back then. And Joe Kinnear was the only person brave - or some would argue crazy - enough to take it. Joe Kinnear Although, the club was suffering. One senior pro uttering in the training centre changing rooms after Kinnear’s appointment: “Somebody is taking the **** out of us here.” After the Hull demonstrations what unfolded was painful and stars like Shay Given and Charles N’Zogbia jumped ship at the earliest opportunity. Relegation at Villa Park was the end product of an emotionally charged season. The three points that Newcastle lost that day went a long way to relegation, United finishing a point behind Hull and dropping into the Championship. United’s honorary life vice-president Malcolm Dix does not want history to repeat itself - and rather than protest against the Tigers has urged fans to do what they are most famous for. He told the Chronicle: “We all know what happened against Hull six years ago and what it led to. “The whole essence as far as Newcastle United is for the supporters to do what they have always done and get behind the team. “On Saturday it’s time to forget about the political side of it. “Forget who owns the club, forget the manager and get behind the players and lift them because they need it. “We all have our views on the owner and the manager. “But I don’t think banners or placards are helping. “It’s going over the top and I don’t think it is needed. “If you are a Newcastle supporter what you need to is get behind the team on Saturday. “I’ve been there before with Lord Westwood, Gordon McKeag and Stan Seymour, you have to forget about that lot and get behind the team. “Otherwise we could be in the Championship again. “This game on Saturday is a crucial fixture for us to win. Newcastle United fans with a sack Pardew banner Newcastle United fans with a sack Pardew banner “We have to do it and get behind the lads.”The Sackpardew.com group have not been back by NUFC Fans United committee members Steve Wraith or Dix. The most popular fan website NUFC.com have not endorsed the group and don’t hold an opinion either way while the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation released the following statement last week after claims that any money handed over to the group would be injected into the charity, it read: “The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has not been contacted by the creator of this website and is not affiliated with it. “While we always appreciate any offer to raise funds to support our work, we feel it would be inappropriate to endorse a campaign to remove a Newcastle United manager.” Dix said: “I’m not sure on this group. “If they are extracting money from fans then somebody needs to find out who they are and why they are doing it. “Steve Wraith and Steve Hastie of NUFC Fans United don’t know anything about them. “It has to be nipped in the bud. “Are they a recognised charity? “You can’t just stand up and ask for money.” The current state of the Magpies will be up for debate at the next NUFC Fans United meeting, an organisation Dix feels fans can use as a platform to express views. He said: “NUFC Fans United are probably the most organised group. “They are the closest you will get to a supporters club. “I’m part of that. “We have had some great discussions in the NUFC Fans United group, some of them with different views but we all talked. “There was a reasonable accord and the group helped things like bringing the St James’ Park gates back.” Dix also hopes that Alan Pardew is able to do his job on the touchline on Saturday. He said: “The manager needs to be able to do his job. “It’s diabolical if he can’t. “I cringed when he was unable to get out of his seat against Cardiff. “You can’t do that to a human being. “Let him manage and get on with it. “It could cost the team three important points. “This is a vital time for everybody concerned with the club.”
